Look how far we have come since dawn's early light

When Gods were the stars man saw in the night

When weapons were made out of rock and of wood

When nature was feared and fire was good

When learning was growth from discoveries found

When the wheel and the stick were the new game in town

How far we have come since mid morning day

When different opinions were hidden away

When religious beliefs could never be shown

When people were killed for having minds of their own

When Christians were slaughtered in beliefs of a grail

When death became feared by the teachings of hell

How far we have come since mid afternoon

When witch trials sang an unjustified tune

When fore fathers signed our nations new day

When ignorance of man still stood in the way

When men were enslaved by the color of skin

When American soldiers were fighting within

How far we have come since evening arrived

When modern technology now started to thrive

When radio and phones were the rage of the day

When airplanes and cars were still finding their way

When technology was learned could be used against man

When Jews were the victims of an inhumane plan

How far we have come into this midnight hour

When we now live in space and have Internet power

When hatred of people is practiced and taught

When children are stolen and then sold and bought

When murder is done with the slightest of ease

When we spend more on vanity than fighting disease

Look how far we have come since night fall has turned

And still we are blind to what our ancestors learned

That division of man comes about when it's said

That our God is living and your God is dead

That hatred and lies tears apart what is truth

That love and respect should be taught to our youth

That people of power should not escape law

That punishment and reward should apply to us all

How far can we go if we continue our way

To laugh in Gods face as we clone a new day

Mans advancement of knowledge may succeed or may fall

With another day dawning...

Or the death of us all.

How Far

Cool, that's what I think this is: cool. This seems like something I would write, but nowhere as good as this. I thought every line flowed great and was thought provoking. I thought the way you made this (format) was a smart, and the words within the Poem was some excellent ... observing? I can't seem to think of the word I'm looking for (as always). I thought this verse was cool and brilliant.

Cheers,

Max

Great poem. It was like a history lesson with a 'moral' at the end of each piece. This is definitely going in my favorites Potter.. you surprise me. You are good for more than just sticky crowns HA! =]

Potter !!!

You put yourself down.

I read lots of substandard stuff on this site, and don't bother to comment because I can't think of anything good to say.

THIS is my kind of poetry, and not just because it rhymes and has words that I can understand.

There's a message that actually makes sense and uses short words that I casn read without having to use a dictionary.

This is really good stuff. God help us all if this tank runs dry.

Read it through three times just to check for hidden messages. Even tried it backwards just to make sure that there wasn't something in there that said "Paul Is Dead".

Really impressive.

How much further

Wow.

This is like something you might buy on a bookmark when you visit a great cathedral.....

And I mean that as a great compliment, not a sly put-down.

Get this poem out there Potter. Widest possible audience.

You have a message about lessons for life here......

I am stunned by your skill.

Kind regards

Harmattan

thought provoking poem, and that in itself is an achievement when obscurity seems to be the way of things. fine poem I'd say.

Oooooooh - I like this

This is really good. I like how you use times of the day and repeating things - like "how far we have come".

I loved this.

This one was simply brilliant.

The content and the format appealed greatly to me. This is definitely my kind of poem.

I found it quite lofty....in a complimentary sense, of course.

I love the arrangement...thank you Potter

Comparing history to one day kind of reminded me of that riddle of the sphinx. The one that compares a human life to a day and says something like "What walks on four feet at the beginning of the day, two at noon, and three in the evening?"

Nice rhyming. Just so you know, rhyming has to be impressive for me to like it. None of that childhood rhyming with easy little phrases. I liked it and it rhymed. So good job.

P.S. The "then" between "vanity" and "fighting" in stanza number five should be "than".
