Politically Correct?

I smoke.

And if the insults

rained on me had been

directed at a black man

a gay or closet queen

or a wearer of a turban

a lesbian or  dwarf

or, God forbid, a woman

There wouldn't have been half

A brew-ha-ha, a court case

And letters to the press.

I marched

throughout the sixties

to help people break free.

I spoke, I waved the banners

And wrote to my M.P.

Minor groups and weaker folk

We had to help their voice,

To ask for basic freedom.

The exercise of choice.

Now I'm in minority

All my efforts? -  No success.

Correct Incorrect

If you enjoy smoking, just go ahead smoking. Life comes only once and you should do what you like. And to hell with being politically correct. For it is right to be wrong here. Smoking is good for health, you know (if you enjoy it.) Good work. Enjoyable.

Now that sounds like a proper englishman! Good on you for spreading the word of how we English are being repressed by PC rubbish. Say what you think as long as you think what you say is my belief.

I can't seem to get rid of the image of a gay black lesbian dwarf wearing a turban. Great poem. Top marks.

It is quite okay to have that image of the little queer fella as long as you don't say "queer".

"small" etc

But non-smokers are now the majority, and might is right.

You can say anything you want about the minority, (smokers) and there are no isms in the so-called civilised world that will go up against you.

I love it in my (open air) restaurant when customers come in and ask for the non-smaking tables.

"Don't be silly!" I tell them, with no fear of comeback from silly people......

As philneale said previously

Soap box now dismounted

Kind regards

focus, focus, focus...

i remember the sixties and seventies. those were very turbulent times, and really, for many in countries - it is the present. but i wander...

back in the 'civil liberties' decade(s) - the focus was on the people - now that most of that is solved the coin has flipped and the focus is on the person - unfortunately lacking in the brother loving humanitarian intent...

great writing!

i think i went a little dash crazy - forgive me...

write on!

PC always smacks of facism by the backdoor. Some faceless jerks dictating the new correct line. But enough of that. It's the poem that counts and this poem does count. (Bukowski would have loved this) It has that good layout, that word for word punchiness, that feel of damned honest good feeling about it. Classic in my book.

Politically Correct?

Pretty great Poem, man. It sounds like something maybe NOFX (that's a punk band) would do. I sang it out as a punk song and it really sounded kickass. Way to go with this one!

By the way, I thought the title for this was carefully and greatly chosen.

Very nice poem. I'm not sure that comparing smoking to the inequality of a race or sexuality is entirely a valid argument, at least to me (I smoke) I see it as a habit, not as a classification system, because all the gay dwarf w/e's out there can smoke too

to dirkin

You know if a junkie goes to hospital or prison the first thing they do is jam him full of substitutes.

It is the fact that THEY will not allow smoking to be a classification system that THEY can get away with being so high and mighty and self righteous.

Smoke on if you enjoy.

Politically correct is only around cause some don't want to hear the truth. I like to smoke and for some of us it's the only vise were aloud to be left with.

Write on Amerz

PC actually hides many basic truths that some people do not want said out loud.
