Jean arrived at the marker two hours later, parking her car in the road. There was only a few minutes left of daylight. The sky was already pink and orange, like fire. Jean stood a few yards away from the beginning of the marker. She looked at The Reaper, who standing a few yards within the mile. Cradled in his arms was Haley, crying out to her. Jean pointed her gun at The Reaper.

"We both know you don't have the courage... we both know you cant even face a ******* mile of ******* road... twenty ******* years..." The Reaper said shaking his head.

"Sad..."

"Shut the **** up!! What the **** do you know about courage, you spineless coward..." she yelled back.

"I know courage... because I know pain..."

"And what ******* pain do you know?"

"I know loss!! I know regret! I know ******* hate! I know what it feels like to belong nowhere... *****! You think that little car wreck affected you? I loved once, and she was ripped from me by the cruel circumstances that is life... you think I had someone to turn to... no, my parents thought of me as weak... so they saw it fit to abuse me... I wonder how weak my mother thought I was when I bashed her head in! I wonder how much of a disappointment my father thought I was when I drove a knife into his skull!"

"So Jean, all you have to do is come and take her, I wont stop you. Then you can slap those silver cuffs on my wrists..."

She sighed and made a step closer to the mile.

Suddenly her mind flooded with memories. She was in the van, metal bending, glass shattering, and blood going everywhere. Screaming.

She fell to the ground sobbing. The Reaper taunted her.

"I guess love really doesn't conquer all... you have until night to come get me, or... well, neither of you will walk away from this..."

Her sobbing continued. In a weak voice, Haley started to sing.

"Hush little baby, don't say a word.

Momma is gonna buy you mocking bird..."

"Oh, how sweet...a little lullaby to calm her down..." The Reaper teased. Haley ignored him, and continued to sing her lullaby. The tears began to dry on Jeans face, and with all the strength she could muster, she passed into the mile. The sun, though, had already ducked below the horizon. She was too late. She broke into a run for The Reaper, her gun poise and ready. He dropped Haley and sliced at Jean with his curved blade. She ran right past him, and on her neck appeared a deep gash that bled profusely. She fell to the ground. With her dying move, she held out her hand to her sister.

"Haley..." and then she forever laid down her head, death taking her. The Reaper laughed.

"You bastard!" Haley yelled as she grabbed a hold of his leg, and bit him. He sighed, and grabbed her neck. She whimpered. With one quick move, he snapped her head.

The next morning the police looked in pure disbelief at the two  dead bodies tied to the pole of the mile 42 marker.

scary

This was kinda scary. It is very dark. The reaper seems really cruel; he taunts her and seems to take pleasure in this. The way you wrote this means that th reader can almost imagine the reaper taunting her, and that is what makes the story really effective.

When the reaper is describing love lost, I could almost feel sorry for him; creating a sense of compassion for this creature makes the story even more appealing.

Nice job!

....

I agree with Forsaken's comment about ALMOST feeling compassion for the Reaper. I thought that maybe Jean was going to get the best of The Reaper in this installment, but I should have known better eh? =]

one mistake: 'She broke into a run for The Reaper, her gun poise and ready' should be POISED and ready. Great job =]

This was pretty good. I didn't really feel much for any of the characters though. They seemed too thin. I did like how you made the ending non-Hollywood by killing the sisters though.
