The End of the Beginning, Chapter 1 |

 PRESENT "Where did you go?" she asked him quietly. Peter jumped and spun , his eyes stinging as the hall light flashed on. He couldn't speak, she would never believe him. Where did you go? she asked louder. A hint of venom seeping through her calm resolve. She was hurt he could see it in her eyes, she knew. He swallowed and said "I did it." "What?" she snarled. "Left her? i don't think so." "No, i did." Peter felt the hole in his chest grow larger. "She's gone trust me." Inside he suffered silently.
3 Hours Earlier "Hey baby!" Jane cried. Her face always lit up when he came to her. Peter walked slowly past , unable to look at her. " What's wrong?" Her long dark hair intruding her eyes, as she struggled to look up at the tall man she loved. "Nothing. I just have some bad news." Peter said, his eyes still near the floor. Jane knew he wanted to look at her. She grabbed his chin and pulled his face close to hers, his dark green eyes flashed towards her brown ones showing love and a hint offear. He slowly pulled them away from her. An alarm went off in her head. " I spoke with her today. She warned me about seeing you...I don't know what to do." His voice cracking under the strain he was feeling. " Who cares about her? I'm not afraid." Jane said. " I will sacrifice anything to be with you. we can leave together." "It's not that easy." He said. The wheels were turning in his head. Maybe if...? " I love you and you love me. right? Of course. How can she not understand that? Why should it matter that you aren't completely human?" she said. Tears started to run down her face. She couldn't let him leave her. She could not live without his eyes, without him. She had finally found "the one" and now it would all be over. She knew the consequences of her actions. Death. And she could be happy with that as long as she tried, because a life without him would be unbearable,a slow and torturous death. She would end it herself if she had to.
"If i leave at midnight while she is sleeping maybe we can get away." he said. " I can take you to the safe haven and we can live there."
"It's too far away. " she said. " What can we do? " Now sobbing uncontrollably, he took her into his arms and contemplated her hopeless words. "If we cannot make it there than we will have to make our own. " He said. " I promise I will always love you and there is nothing that can or will stop me from that. No matter what happens." "I love you too. Always. We will try for the safe haven tonight." she said. "Tonight?" he said. "Yeah, it's the only chance we'll have." PRESENT 12:01 flashes on the clock behind her. "You know what the consequence will be for her." she said coldly her red eyes piercing into the very core of his mind. "Just because we look similar doesn't mean are anything alike, there is no such thing as love between our kind and theirs. There never has been and there never will be." She then stood and smiled at him, "You will see." "You're wrong." He said. He sensed a movement behind him and then a hard blow to the back of his head.
