The next day Kisha was awakened by a growling sound. She looked around to find a wolf growling at Gertrude. Kisha saw that Gertrude did not look frightened. Kisha was frightened. She hadn't known that there were wolves in these woods. "And again we meet," Gertrude said. "I thought that you were leaving." "I was," the wolf replied. "But I was intercepted and they took Fredrick again." Kisha realized that the wolf must be Zanjot. Zanjot knew Gertrude? Kisha was terribly confused. "Whoa, whoa, wait," Kisha said. "I am terribly befuddled and would like to know what is happening." Gertrude looked at Zanjot questioningly and he nodded. "The king has stolen Bob's friend Fredrick and he wants him back. I helped him the first time but it seems that Fredrick got caught again." "Are you going to help again?" Kisha asked. "If Zanjot does not mind," Gertrude said as she looked at Zanjot for acceptance. "Sure, but I'm keeping and eye on you." "Well alright then," Kisha said. "What's to be done now?" "I don't know," Zanjot said. "You could ask Gertrude; she seems to know the palace well." "Then what do you suggest, Gertrude?" "I don't know. We could try asking for him back." "I'm a wanted man," Zanjot exclaimed. "Who knows what the king will do to me if I just show up and ask for Fredrick?" "Fine," Gertrude retorted, "Do you suggest we just sit here and wait?" "Well, no. I don't know. Last time you were in the palace not sitting out here with me." Kisha certainly didn't know what to do. She was discouraged because she had been looking for adventure but, upon finding it, she was learning that it was not as fun as she had thought that it would be. She had thought that an adventure would be easy. In stories from the village she had lived in, and which her parents still lived in, everyone seemed to know what to do and where able to take the right course of action. And suddenly, thinking about her village, she wanted to be back there. She wanted to see her family again, and her friends. Kisha decided that after this adventure she would go back home. Kisha went to go sit with Geoffrey; her back to his side. Geoffrey was still asleep. His side was rising and falling with the slow breathing that sleep brings. Kisha wondered if Geoffrey would go back with her. Geoffrey had never seen the village. They had met after Kisha had left. Gertrude suddenly started to yell so loud that Kisha could hear her from her spot beside Geoffrey. "You can sit here and I will go ask for him back!" "Fine, I will go with you. Sitting in a cell probably won't be much different then sitting out here." They walked toward Kisha and Geoffrey. Patricia was not very far away from Geoffrey and when she saw Gertrude walking toward her she got up and went to Gertrude. "Are you coming?" Zanjot questioned Kisha. Kisha nodded and jumped onto Geoffrey's back. Zanjot transformed into a dragon. On Patricia's back was Gertrude. Off they set; following Gertrude to the king's palace. It might have been an enjoyable ride had Kisha not been thinking about what Zanjot had said. Would the king lock them up? The garatapuss had been stolen by the king. Why would Zanjot get locked up? Kisha fell asleep during the ride and when she woke up they were landing. They were right outside the palace. "The pets should stay out here," Gertrude said. They walked into the city, towards the castle. The city was bustling with activity: merchants selling their wares, people searching for something to buy, or just standing around in groups discussing matters of little importance. Soon they had reached the palace. A guard stopped them at the entrance and asked them what they wanted. "We would like an audience with the king," Gertrude told him. "Do you have an appointment?" "No, but tell him that it is about family." "Very well." The guard left. The small group stood outside the gate waiting for the return of the guard. A few minutes passed and the guard returned. He let them in and led them down several passage ways until they came upon two tall golden doors. The guard knocked and two other guards opened the big doors into a red and golden room. The king sat on a golden throne; a golden crown upon his head. The room itself was painted red. The throne was in the back of the room in the very middle of the wall. There were steps leading up onto a platform which ran the whole width of the back part of the room. A red carpet spanned the area from the door to the throne, right down the middle of the room. On each side of the carpet was a table, covered with a red table cloth, surrounded by red and gold chairs. The king spoke, "What could you possibly have to tell me about family? I have no family left so don't tell me lies." "You think that you have no family left," Gertrude replied. "But what if you do? You would do anything for family, wouldn't you?" "Who are you?" "How do you know that all of your family is dead?" "I kept them all very close. They are all dead now." "Are you sure?" "Why do you ask?" "I know someone." "Who?" "What are you willing to do for that information?" "What do you want?" "The garatapuss." "And how do I know that you are not lying? How do I know that you will not run off because you have no information?" "You can keep me here as you let the garatapuss leave with Zanjot." Gertrude motioned toward Zanjot. The king had not noticed Zanjot before now. "So," the king said, "You decided to give yourself up." "Certainly not, you are to let me and Fredrick go free. I know that you will and so do you so stop delaying." Kisha didn't understand what was going on. "Why would he care for family so much?" Kisha whispered to Gertrude. "Family is what put him on the throne. He would like to keep the family on the throne." Kisha still didn't fully understand. She supposed it was one of those weird human traditions. "Fine," the king growled, "You take your garatapuss and leave. But you had better not be seen again in my kingdom." The king turned to one of his guards standing beside his throne. "Go fetch the garatapuss." Then he turned back to Gertrude. "And what is the information that you have for me?" "I am your niece. My mother was Alice." "You are lying to me! Alice never married." "You are wrong. She married an elf, Yuldoe. She told me that you would not believe me. ‘I never want you to live in a palace', she would tell me. ‘I want you to learn how to do things for yourself, without all those maids around you'. "But she told me that if I ever needed help that I should come to you; come and bring you this." Gertrude held out a necklace. It was very pretty. Red and black stones ran the circumference of it; in the front was a big, red stone. The king seemed to be remembering something that had happened a long time ago. "I gave her this. I gave it to her right before she left. Why did you come back?" "Mother told me that I should come to you if I needed help. I don't need help, but I think that you do." The king noticed that Kisha and Zanjot were still in the room. The guard had already returned with Fredrick so the king ordered them to leave so that he could be alone with his niece. Kisha had enough adventure for now so she went back to the hidden village with Geoffrey. Zanjot also went with her. He wanted to be in solitude away from humans. Kisha wondered if she would ever have another adventure. She doubted it; this had probably been enough for a lifetime. Copyright 2008 Lily Qwert |
