Rom said one afternoon while pointing at an obese man patiently falling in line to secure a passport just across my table.
It was obviously a joke but to me, it sounded like a prophecy. I admit I am afraid to gain weight. My family has a profile of obesity. In fact, my father and uncles were already overweight when they were in their early thirties.
I did not have to worry much then about my weight. My metabolism was fast so even if I gorged too much on food, my body weight remained the same. I even tried eating more than normal. Then, after graduating from college, I became less active and idle on weekends. My high school friends noticed that I gained too much weight. So I decided to trim down. I blamed it again on my metabolism. It slowed down year after year. So, now, I am anxious that I would still gain weight even if go on a special diet.
Three months ago, I started cutting my carbohydrates intake and ate low-fat, high-fiber foods. After a month of discipline and some exercise, the scale went down from 170 lbs. to 149 lbs. That's almost six pounds a week!
Yesterday, my sister said, "Hey, your denims are practically falling off!" I proudly replied almost instantly, "Yeah, I know, there's not much fat on my waist for my pants to hold onto. Copyright 2008 Alvin De La Fuente |
