A Short Morning

There was no hope. Not for Henry Wallace. Not anymore. As he stood over the railing of his apartment building Henry looked down at the eight story drop that was about to end his life. The day had hardly begun and already he was being driven to suicide. Why was life so cruel? Why wasn't Henry one of the lucky ones? And why had he neglected his pop tarts? It was the last package, he should've been more protective. But it was too late to have regrets now. The pop tarts were burnt to a black crispy block and it was all his fault.

As Henry Wallace jumped to his death the thought occurred to him that there was plenty of time to buy more pop tarts. There were even microwavable pancakes in the freezer along with a carton of eggs in the fridge and a full 16 oz. bottle of syrup waiting patiently in the cupboard. But it was too late for regrets now since Henry had lost the support of the ground. If only he was able to cope with breakfast disappointment. "Maybe I could," he said out loud before his body slammed into the ground interrupting his thought along with his life. Nearby a child began to scream as years of future therapy leaked out of Henry's body.

It's a funny idea--taking such a desperate leap as suicide just because of burnt pop-tarts, but the shortness of this and the hyperbolic "Why was life so cruel?" line give the piece an unintentional (I hope) cruelty. It comes off like you're making fun of people who commit suicide. Maybe set up the character more beforehand--is he a drama queen in other aspects of his life? This could be a very funny little piece if expanded.

Two paragraphs and perfectly timed - unlike your charecter who remembered he had plenty of time to buy more after it was too late- I loved the irony of this particular peice.

very well written
