The pain surged through Private First Class Liam Harris's body as Master Sergeant .James Millwall pulls an eight inch piece of metal out of his leg blood begins gushing from the gaping wound. James places his hand onto the wound and presses down hard trying to stop the bleeding; this causes a scream of agony to erupt from Liam. Quickly James slaps his other hand over Liam's mouth while whispering "shut the **** up, I'll give you something for the pain in a sec". James removes his hand from Liam's mouth and reaches into a pouch hanging from his belt he removes two small plastic tubes, one containing a green liquid and the other containing several yellow pills. He hands the pills to Liam who greedily swallows them. James pours the liquid over the wound and green foam immediately begins to form. After several minute James wipes away the foam and sees the wound is almost healed.
Liam asks "sarge were you able to get a message to command about an evac"? While pulling a canteen from a shoulder bag James replies "no I lost my communicator in the attack, what about you"? Liam shakes his head and says" mine was crushed when I fell on it diving for cover". James unscrews the top of his canteen and takes a long drink of the cool water, after about a minute of gulping water James offers the canteen to Liam. Liam declines the canteen and says "No thanks not thirsty but I'd kill for a smoke". "Sorry Private I am" James stops mid sentence places his finger to his lips telling Liam to be quiet, while slowly removing his side arm from its thigh holster, James tells Liam he will be right back. After several minutes Liam hears several repulser blasts and the sound of people running in his direction, he quickly grabs for his side arm and discovers the holster is empty. Franticly he looks around for anything that can be used as a weapon; he spots the piece of metal that was pulled from his leg. Just as Liam grabs the piece of metal he sees a yellow flash and everything goes black.
The next thing Liam remembers he is floating in a thick pink jelly substance with a respirator in his mouth. The jelly is drained and Liam sees he is in a large tube. The front of the tube slides to the right with a hiss, standing outside the tube is James wearing a white robe and two technicians Liam removes the respirator and step out into a large room with about twenty ten foot tall and six foot wide tubes filled with pink jelly lining the walls, one of the techs hands him a robe and says "welcome to rebirthing station one twenty four, name and rank please" Liam reply's "Private First Class Liam Harris". "Thank you Private you and Sergeant Millwall will follow technician Woods to waiting area four where you will find shower facilities and uniforms" The two soldiers are lead down the hall to their assigned waiting area. Inside the room is several shower stalls, a worn out brown couch, a large metal storage cabinet containing OD green military uniforms, black combat boots and a stack of severely out dated magazines.
After about and hour James and Liam hear a knock on the door and a gentleman wearing a white lab coat and carrying a clip board enters the room, he introduces himself as Doctor William Smyth. The doctor says he will be performing a couple tests to verify that their memory and personality downloaded properly during the rebirthing processes. Also he will need to make sure the memory/ personality storage and transmitting device placed at the base of our skulls is working properly. Three hours later James and Liam have been told that ever thing has checked out and they will need to report to Captain John Viola for debriefing. The two leave the rebirthing station and walk two blocks south to the mobile command center.
James and Liam sign in with the MP at the front and are immediately escorted by two MP's to a small room containing a table and three chairs. One of the MP's say's "Captain Viola will be with you in a moment" and closes the door Twenty minutes later the door opens and Captain Viola enters the room carrying a cup of coffee and a briefcase, James and Liam jump from their seat and stand at attention. The captain places the items on the table and takes a seat, he opens his briefcase removes several folders, he then closes the briefcase and places it on the floor. The captain opens one of the folders and while looking through it he say's "Private Harris leave the room and wait in the hall, Sergeant Millwall have a seat". The door closes and James say's "sir I was wondering if you could tell me how many of my other men where rebirth here"? With out looking up from his paper work the captain replies "the download signals from the other six men in your unit were lost you and the private are the only survivor". The Captain picks up his coffee cup takes a quit sip then say's "Sergeant according to this mission briefing I've been going over you and your men were on search and destroy mission in the Alaskan wasteland what happen"?
"Sir my unit was assigned grid fourteen about twenty miles north of Anchorage, our target was a large rebel encampment. On the third day we came across a small group of scavengers who after some persuasion told use that several months ago a group of people had come and chased all the scavengers from Anchorage and began setting up equipment in the burned out buildings, after disposing of the scavenger's body's we headed out. When we got to the outskirts of the city the APC's recon drone was launched. While waiting for the drone to perform its sweep of the area Private Harris and I went out to set up the null field generator. All of the sudden I heard this whistling noise and the APC explodes. The next thing I remember I'm on the ground and there's APC wreckage everywhere. While searching the area for any usable gear I found Private Harris under a piece of the APC he was in ok shape a couple of bruises, the worst was the piece of metal stuck in his leg. I administered first aid and we were waiting for the Privates leg to heal when we were attacked by a group of rebels, they must have been sent to see if there was anything worth salvaging and came across myself and the private".
The Captain asked several questions then assigns James his quarters and tells him to send in the Private on his way out. About two hours later Liam leaves the command center and sees James waiting outside, James approached Liam and say's " well kid how'd it go" ? "I think it went fine I told him what happen he took some notes then said I could go. How long do you think it's going to be before we get assigned to a new unit"? James shrugs his shoulders and say's "don't know". Several days later Liam and James are boarding a military supply transport headed to lunar penal colony six were they have been assigned to as MP's, during the transports descent the engine malfunctioned causing the transport to crash into the sea of tranquility killing everyone on board. The investigators report said a piece of the ships hull had come off exposing the ships fuel lines, which caused them to freeze. The ironic thing is the lunar colonies rebirthing satellite had malfunctioned and crashed several days earlier, the transport was carrying their replacement satellite. Copyright 2008 dave |
