![]() prelude 1908, NEW YORK
it was night, the moon bathing the city in pale light. a very wiry man, kirk freehan, walked the streets beside central park. his eyes darted back and forth, as if he was searching for something. he had a briefcase in his possesion, which he carried at his side. he was breathing heavily, his breath coming in rasps. he almost jogged as he made his way through the streets.suddenly a growl from behind sent a tingle through his spine.he turned around, and looked into the eyes of a wolf. it bared its teeth. a grey shrivled hand, with thin, spidery fingers, ending in black talons, stroked the creatures fur. "shhh, my pet, calm down," a raspy voice cooed. kirk trembled. "you'll have to forgive him, he is just a little, how do you put it, grumpy... he has not eaten in two days... he's probably starved." " please, i need just a little more time..." kirk pleaded. the man stepped out of the shadows. he was draped in crimson robes, his head bore thin strands of white hair. his face was wrinkled intensly, his eyes a pale orange and yellow. wrinkles spread over his face like spider webs. he appeared to be at least 200 years old, yet he moved with fluincy and energy, like a child. he smiled a lipless smile, revealing gnarled yellow and brown teeth. " no, you time is up... my masters demand you keep your end, or i will suffer, and they are not known for mercy, much less, being civil." " i beg you, all i need is more time, please, to tell my family good bye..." " no!" the man said sharply. " please..." " no, they are growing impatient, as am i..." suddenly, in his hands, appeared a contract, on a parchment of paper. signed in blood was kirks signature. "so, you are unable to provide the payment?" " y-yes, but only for now, if you give me a week..." " no, no more time!" " please" he begged the man. the man laughed, but it sounded more like a cough. he pointed a narrow finger at kirk. " no, no,no,no, wait, wait,please...nooo!" kirk screamed, and he burst into flames. he broke into a run, screaming, into the night, the flames could not be put out though, not by flour, or water, or by any other means. the man laughed. " he will be of use, in the future, as will the others...now, go, cerbain, into the night, find the others..." the wolf growled and departed. in a flurry of red fire, the man was gone.
