![]() "Where are they?" Leslie asked. Evalyn shrugged her shoulders and pulled out her phone. "Hold up, I'll call," she said. Leslie slumped in the passanger's seat. The two young girls were sitting in the bowling alley parking lot. Leslie blew a piece of hair out of her face. "Hey, where are you guys? What? How could you be lost? Where are you?" Evalyn was saying into her phone. Leslie rolled her eyes. "If they're lost they don't know where they are," she mumbled. Evalyn ignored her. "You don't know? Are you sure you're even still in Knoxville?" she asked. Leslie looked at her friend. Evalyn's long brown hair was slightly messed up from driving with the windows down. Her glasses shone in the sunlight. Leslie sighed and looked in the mirror. Her hair was blond from the beach and her rosed-colored sunglasses weren't blocking the gleaming sun very well. "Okay, if you say so," Evalyn said and closed her phone. Leslie looked at her friend with amusement in her eyes. "What?" she asked. "Nothing. It's getting hot in here," Leslie complained. Evalyn laughed. "The boys said they'll be here soon. There some where downtown," Leslie explained. "Can we wait for them inside?" Leslie wondered. Evalyn smiled and nodded her head. The two girls walked past the church van that had parked beside them. They walked up the few steps past some biker dudes smoking. Leslie looked at them and the stared at her. Evalyn stared back at them. Once inside they stood near the door. "They better not ditch us," Leslie stated. Evalyn giggled. "I hope they meant this bowling alley," she said. Leslie leaned up agaisnt the coke machine. "It's been a few minutes," Leslie stated. "I know that, look!" Evalyn said. She pointed at a white car but it didn't pull into the parking lot. "Nope, not them," Leslie said. Evalyn frowned. A older guy walked to the coke machine and Leslie moved. "There," Evalyn said but stopped as she saw the white car go by. "Uck! I'm sitting down," Leslie said and sat in a racing car chair. Just as she sat three guys walked in. Two were big and stalky and the third was skinny with wild hair. The three guys stared at the two girls. "You're late," Leslie blamed. Kamern shrugged and Sam smiled at Evalyn. She rolled her eyes noticable only to Leslie who laughed. They walked to the counter to get their shoes. "I'll pay for you," Sam told Evalyn. "Do I have a choice?" she said loudly looking at Leslie. Her friend shrugged. "You have money?" Kamern asked Leslie she looked at him and put her hand on her hip. He was a head taller than her but she stood as tall as she could. "Yes, unless your willing to pay for me," she challenged. He smiled. "What size shoe do you wear?" he asked. She grinned at him. "Eight and a half," she told the lady at the counter and walked off as she was given her shoes. The two girls sat away from the boys as they put their shoes on. "Leslie, this is going to be weird," Evalyn whispered. "Yes, it will," Leslie answered bluntly. "He's in love with me. I can't hurt him," she said. "I know, just... don't worry about it," Leslie said. They picked their bowling balls and Sam tried to put there names on the screen. After unsuccesfully operating the machine Kamern took over the job. The girls soon figured out how horrible the guys were at bowling. First time through the girls got strikes and the boys got five, ten and zero. "What's your name?" Leslie asked the skinny guy. "He's not important," Kamern stated. The guy smiled. Leslie frowned at Kamern and glared at him. "It's important to me," she stated. "Josh," the skinny guy replied. Leslie smiled. After the first three sets Leslie and Evalyn went to the bathroom. "So, this is fun," Leslie said from within a stall. "Yep, loads," Evalyn said with heavy sarcasm. Leslie laughed. Back outside the bowling continued. Kamern ending up sitting next to Leslie somehow and Leslie looked at Evalyn who shrugged. Next to their lane a bunch of middle aged-woman were starting to bowl. As the group of teenagers continued to bowl the made fun of the women who were screaming gleefully continuely. Leslie and Evalyn sat next to each other. Next to Evalyn sat Sam. Next to Leslie sat Kamern and he kept scooting closer to her. Leslie looked at Evalyn pleadingly but only received the same look back from Evalyn. Josh sat quietly behind the four. Leslie got up to bowl. "Use the green ball," Sam said. "Yeah!" Kamern edge on. Leslie rolled her eyes and obliged their wish. She knew she'd regret this. As she began to swing backwards the ball was too heavy and pulled her back with it. As she swung it forward she went backwards. The ball went in the gutter and Leslie hit the floor. "Never will I listen to you guys again," she said and laughed with the group. They ended the first game and started the second adding Tyler to the line of people playing. He was taller than them all and huge. He also couldn't bowl. "When will the torture be over?" Leslie asked under her breath. "Five more sets," she said. Leslie sighed. Kamern was now almost completely in her lap and Sam was being awkward because Evalyn wasn't talking to him much. This bowling 'date' was going horrible. Leslie watched two gay guys beside the teenagers bowling. They were better than the boys. Evalyn took her phone out and Leslie looked over. She caught a glimpse of the text before she looked away. It said that Kamern liked her. Evalyn and Leslie looked at each other and laughed. They had already figured that out. "One set to go," Leslie said joyfully. She wanted to leave these geeky boys. "I know," Evalyn said as happy back. Leslie sighed. It wasn't the fact that they didn't have fun. Actually, Leslie hadn't laughed that hard for a long time. It was the fact the these boys were too geeky and the girls were happy with being friends only. Evalyn smiled as the game ended. They quickly changed into their flipflops and followed the guys out the door. "What lane were you in?" the counter lady screamed after the boys. Leslie and Evalyn walked up to her. "Lane sixteen," Leslie said sweetly. The lady nodded thanks. Tyler held the door for the two girls. Leslie walked quickly to the car. "Wanna go to Harby's?" Sam asked them. Leslie looked at Evalyn. "Where?" Leslie asked. "Harby's. It's a pizza placed down the street," he answered. "Umm... we kinda ate before we came," Leslie said while putting her sunglasses on. "Looking cool Leslie!" Kamern told her. She did a thumbs up. "Yeah, duh! Of course," she answered. "Thanks. Goodbye," Evalyn said getting into her car. "Later!" Leslie said sitting in the passenger's seat. The boys left and the girls stayed there awhile. "That was horrible!" Leslie practically shreiked. "I know. I liked Josh. Why couldn't Josh talk to us," Evalyn said. "I know. He was cute and quiet and funny. Uck! Did you see Kamern?" Leslie said. "Yeah. Sam said he wanted to ask you out,' Evalyn commented. "I know why do you think I didn't give him a chance too?" Leslie said slumping in the passenger's seat. "Do you think Sam got the hint I don't like him," Evalyn asked. "I don't know. I was busy trying to keep Kamern away from me," Leslie snapped. "It was awkward," Evalyn said thoughtfully ignoring Leslie's tone. "Let's go. Horrible dates are good causes to listen to screaming, loud music," Leslie said. Evalyn smiled and but a burned CD in the car. She pulled out and sighed. "That car had to want this parking space and block the freaking exit," she protested. Leslie looked at the guys in the red sports car and smiled. "Now why couldn't we have bowled with them?" she said as Evalyn pulled out. Copyright 2008 Jessica McGaha |
