A much shorter chapter, I'm afraid.

-----------

He awoke to the sound of cereal falling into a bowl. Sunlight splashed across his face while the last vestiges of sleep took refuge from the luminance. Irene's necklace rested on his chest, one of his hands resting calmly over it. He found himself lying on the couch, one leg dangling off the side while his other was drawn up, knee suspended in the air. A small bit of drool had formed on the edge of his lips, and he hurriedly wiped it away.

Evelyn emerged from the kitchen, holding a bowl of obscenely sugary cereal. She stared curiously at her father. For a moment, the two simply locked eyes, unsure of what to say.

Evelyn jiggled her bowl, the spoon tinkling against the plastic edge.

"I made myself some cereal."

"...Oh. It's not a turtle today."

"Nope."

There was silence again, more staring. David rose from the couch, yawning as he did so. Evelyn broke free of her immobility, trotting with all the lightheartedness of youth towards the small table just in front of the sofa. There, she plopped down, placed her bowl on the table with great ceremony, and used her spoon to press the power button on the remote.

"Evelyn?"

A noise somewhere between a "huh" and an "hmm" was her reply.

"Did you and that girl from last night talk?"

"Yeah. She was nice."

"What did you talk about?"

"Our powers, T.V., animals, and...umm...you, I think."

"Me?"

"Yeah. She said that you were gonna make everything better really soon."

Evelyn tore her eyes away from the television, and for the first time in his life, David looked away.

"Are you, Daddy?"

David trudged into the kitchen, slumping against the wall as soon as he was out of Evelyn's sight.

"Yeah sweetheart, yeah."

Lord played a difficult game. It did not help matters that, when David moved to the cupboard to retrieve some of his own cereal, a squirrel sat on his windowsill, its gaze locked on him.

Nice

I wish it was longer but you get the decision across thus progressing the story. Damn squirrels, always spying you.

Short but sweet. If I were you, depending on how you decide to end this, I would see about having it published. This is a great alternative to the X-Men story, and it's more interesting, in my opinion.

Yeah very short but probably needed to slow down the story. I like the last paragraph with the squirell.
