Escaping the Walls

Alone he sits, confined by the walls

Of madness and evil. He runs the labyrinth

of his mind, trying to escape his demons

and the demons from beyond.

He leaves the walls once in a while

only to return to that providing cell.

He cannot live with out them, yet

They are killing him from within.

The ones on the outside

His best friends and acquaintances

Know nothing of his hell

Or his longing for them.

They unknowingly save him

Help him through another day

Knowing they're there

Escaping the walls once more.

He wants to let them know

How much they mean to him.

Let the one know what goes on

Beyond his walls.

But what will the one do,

knowing his friend's pain?

Avoid, understand? Avoid?

He cannot take that chance.

Three years is all, until

The walls finally crumble

Thinner they get, as each

Day goes by.

All he, or I, as you see,

Can hope for is the one's

kindness and love, and maybe

My mind will be salvageable still.

mental state!

hi! tom.

well, u've made a good statement on mentally ill patients. they go through their own hell, despite the help from their friends and near ones.

u've brought out this pain very well. it rents a heart asunder. god help him. amazing poem. lol. ;-)

Ha I wrote this about myself, all from personal and current experience. I'm not mentally ill, the way I see it (yet) but it does take a toll. Thanks for the comment :)

good job! I'm not sure I would say this was about mental people lol, but I thought it was a good description of people and the secrets they keep from others, hoping to find one person who will understand and accept them for who they are. am i totally off base there?

not really off base, just the "secret" is more of the "behind closed doors" type than "billy picks his nose" type. But yeah, the acceptance thing is there, but I'm aiming for someone who can accept the situation I'm in, and not treat me any differently than they already do (specifically a close friend, the "one" in the poem).

no, I totally got the 'behind closed doors' thing. we all have our little quirks that not EVERYONE knows about but is still a part of who we are.

If billy picks his nose, we ought to get him some kleenex eh? =]

You have done a commendable job bringing out the plight of mentally ill so sensitively. How can anyone know wht hell they are going through each day. This is sad but sheer delight to read.
