Walter paced nervously across his house, trying to think of his course of action. "I could just hop in the car, take 59 out to Plainfield, and be done with this forever." he murmured to himself. "No. Laurie is somewhere out there. If I don't do anything, she could be dead in a second. Maybe I should run out there, but make an escape if I need to with the car." "What if Laurie is already dead? I could just take the car out now, if I don't see her, I don't stay." All these different plans and ideas were whirling through his brain, beads of sweat dripping from his curly brown hair. He started towards the window, carrying just his uncertainty in his hands, and ripped the curtain off its rod. Walter was expecting light to flush the shadows from his house, but only the pale black sky looked back at him. Out of the corner of his eye, Walter saw a rustle in the hedges. He looked intently at his yard, waiting for the thing's next move. Walter only dashed away for a moment, grabbing a .09 Magnum from his desk a room over. He slowly walked towards the door, reaching his hand for the knob. Knock, knock. A heavy fist pounded on the door twice, Walter telling himself it was the wind. He could have sworn he heard a mocking voice in sync with each knock on his door. He sprinted uptairs, skipping the single creaky stair he had, to an alcove on the second floor, to a window that had full sight of his front door. There was a figure standing there, looking at the door. Walter pressed his face up against the glass to get a better look. The figure slowly cocked its head back and turned towards Walter, revealing its face... It was Laurie! Walter leaped back from the glass, stunned by the discovery. "I have to save her. She's there. She came to me, haha! This was easier than I had thought this would be. We'll just get in the car," Walter was panicky but happy he bolted, the front door in sight as he took a victorious but quick step on each stair. He could see Laurie in the window pane on the door, excited but also nervous- Creeeeeeeek, SNAP! Walter fell face first onto his stairs, his gun flying from his palm. He looked back to see his ankle caught, his foot went straight through the worn wood of his creaky stair. He couldn't get up, his knee had bent the wrong way and his foot was stuck. He looked at Laurie, a dark brown sack being slowly lifted over her head... "LAURIE!" he yelled, but it was too late. The front door slowly opened, the locks meaning nothing to this demon. The demon and Walter locked eyes, each pair sunken and shattered. Laurie lay on the front porch motionless. And to think, he could have been in Plainfield right about now.
