A Wow Story Author: Jessie Masoner
I've been on the run for three days now; I have seen things in this horrid wasteland that nobody in their life should see. Dead women and children hung by their intestates some still alive reaching out to me for help but all I can do is run. The blackness of death is hot on my trail and I will not let him catch up with me. If nothing else I will find the others and fight this off we have faced worse together, those damned people Mathis assigned to us just escaped using their arcane energies leaving us stranded here, they sure as hell better get some help and soon. For the past three days I have endured these sights for what, to escape ha all I've done is prolong the inevitable, my doom shall not come quick I have seen it in my dreams when I run far enough to rest for a few hours until these undead are upon me again with their moans and their stench, even through all of that I can hear him, he is in my head speaking to me telling my to give in it is my only hope but I know he will just use me. I am far enough now so I am able to rest; I only sleep in trees so I can get out of their reach for enough time to be warned.
I slowly drift to sleep and I dream of what has happened, what is happening, and what will happen. The future is not set in stone I tell myself; the destiny of one "person" is enough to change the entire face of this planet we call home, with a little help from the gods we can do what we strive for and I will succeed in my journey even if it destroys my soul. I remember what happened when I was still young to this world, a once proud forsaken took me in when and protected me against all of their eyes their hateful words and their attempts at my life, I lived with him for ten years before I was able to rejoin my people by then the war had ravaged this world enough to cause a split in the people nobody wanted to be near my people for what they had to do to survive and the ones who stayed with one side were ostracized from the people who the went to. In the days before the ignorant humans "Rescued" me from my forsaken family I remember old man Geleficus who had been a great sorcerer for the great lich king came to me and told me that there is trouble coming and I needed to stay down stairs and wait for him to come for me.
After three days of waiting I soon grew tired and like every young person I believe I knew everything about everything, when I emerged from my hiding place I seen the old man fighting off so many of the humans who were on their crusade to retake these lands for the "Greater good" did they not realize that these were people too that because of them the lich king did not send his army down to crush every last living soul down here and here they come trying to kill everything trying to cleanse the blight from the grounds with their fire, and then I saw him in the shadow of the flame he seen his Geleficus taking on the four of them, at the time he did not know who they were but he would late know them as the Four Horsemen. They came at my master with their swords but the old man was smarter than them and he knew where and how to hit them at to throw them off balance, and yet even though he could have easily killed them he did not, I did not know it at the time but he was ready to die protecting me, he knew that if he killed these four poor excuses for humans, the other humans would come for him and burn everything in their way. About halfway through his fight with these four he spotted me, I scurried away fearful not of these four but of the punishment for disobeying him. After about fifteen more minutes of fighting that sounded like an entire battlefield, but in actuality it was only those five, I heard nothing. Then I heard it, slowly at first then it became louder with each passing second, the pant of the humans breath coming from behind him, I covered my face to shield myself from the coming blow. I did not expect what happened next, they sounded excited, like they found a treasure that had long been lost I had no idea what they were saying they covered me in a blanket and made their way back where they came. I thought the old man was successful until we passed the area where the battle took place, I seen it with my own eyes the old man laying there without a head lifeless.
When I closed my eyes that night I seen him, he told me to not be afraid that I would be safer with these people. He told me that I had a great future planned and to keep strong for in time I would face somebody that threatened to destroy everything that he stood for; he made me promise that I would not come back here. His last words to me were that he would always be with me in my heart and mind. We were on our way to the great city of Stormwind, inside these walls held the hatred of so many, yet there was hope slight as it was but there was still hope. I would feed off of it and use it to gain power; those children in the orphanage with me would server as tools for their future undoing. I was only a few years old at that time.
-Fifty Years Later-
At the time he was nothing more than an orphan on the street begging for food, or picking pockets. As I approached him I intentionally left my moneybag hanging on my side so he was able to take it, if he was good enough, the moment he approached me I knew I was his target with unseen swiftness he reached for my bag, I nearly missed grabbing his hand, he tried to get away but I took him into the cheese merchants shop where I proposed to train him to become something greater than he could ever dream. With that I left him in the care of the master assassin of the time to train him. I was contacted many years later by my young friend Mathis he told me of his rise though the ranks of SI:7, and now it was his turn to request my services, he had a job for me to rescue two solders who had been captured by a local gang in Westfall, with that said and done with I left to find the two surrounded by petty thieves, not shocking but what was shocking was when I found out who their leader was, the great Stonemason Edwin VanCleef he was betrayed by the city after rebuilding it after the great war. As I approached him his enforcers were upon me, as I had nothing but my staff, I conceded defeat only to buy time. They eventually brought me before VanCleef , as he approached me he knew who I was and quickly released me, I remember his words as if he is speaking the right now, "What can I do for you young master of time?" with a quick bow of respect him thugs left us to our talks. "Let me get to the point young sir, I am here at the request of your former master." "Master Shaw?" "The one and only." "What business does he have with me?" "Well he sent me here to find and ‘rescue' two solders." "And why should I do this for you?" "If you do this for me I shall tell you something that you are going to want to know." "Really and what is that?" "Release the two who I am here for and you shall find out." "Fine they shall be released" with a wave of his arm a man appeared at his side and ran from the room. "You knew he was there didn't you?" "Yes I did, and now when I see these two I shall tell you what I originally came here to tell you." "Didn't you say you were here to get these two?" "I said Mathis sent me here for those two, I came here for you." "But how did you know I would let you live?" "How long did I spend training Mathis? How long!" "I don't see how you training Mathis has anything to do with me!" "It has everything to do with you, if you will be kind enough to let me finish a sentence I will tell you." "Alright finish your sentence." "Now as I was saying..."
-Five Years Later-
"Did you hear VanCleef was killed for attempting to destroy this city?" Nagasae exclaimed, "oh well he was the one who had us captured, would have done it myself..." "But you were tied up in the back, is that what you were going to day?" Fluffie interrupted. "Now remember we were both tied up back there and it was you who got us captured in the first place, if it wasn't for Boss then we would most likely be deader than a doornail right now." "Yeah you're right, by the way where is your boyfriend?" "BOYFRIEND! He's our boss and he saved our life, what makes you think I even like him, I uhh respect him that's all." "Yeah well you can "Respect" him all you want because I seen him with some woman the other day." "Liar, he wouldn't do that I have never seen him with anyone other than us."
"That may be true because you cant keep your eyes off of him can you, told you, you like him." "Alright cut the crap, we've got a mission, Fluffie go get ready, Naga with me." As soon as Fluffie left the room I said quietly, "Careful Naga, this will be the last time I save your life from her again." "Sorry Boss" "Yeah well here is the situation, we have reports of bandits attacking the area surrounding the Duskwood area, as you know that place is still heavily infested with mindless flesh eaters, we last received an action report about two weeks ago. The entire area may be overrun now that's where you come in, if it is indeed overrun we don't want a single living or dead thing coming back at us. Our orders are to rid the area of the mindless menace, and if possible search for survivors. "Boss if we do come across any survivors? "Our orders are to search them and ensure none of the infection gets past the border, if the "Survivor is infected I will personally take care of them." "Now as you know VanCleef was recently killed with him gone there will be a power struggle going on in that area so be alert to any other remenents or some new faction vying for power." "Boss, when are we going to see your face? All we know about you is that you have Blue eyes." "Now that is a good question, hmm let me thing, how about if you are still with me in ten years I will let you see my face." "Awesome so lets get this mission over and done with." As we left our "office" I noticed we were being followed by two individuals, if they weren't starting at me directly I wouldn't have noticed them, they were good, most likely someone from Shaw's organization, I'll have to talk with him when we get back.
When we got to Duskwood we soon realized that the situation was much worse than originally specified, the trees were covered in creep, and I knew that it was only in the beginning stages if we were quick we would be bale to stop this infection from spreading any further. We snuck as far into the land as possible, before being detected by some newly formed flesh eaters, I noticed they had tags around their neck; Nagasae quickly dispatched these mindless ones. The closer we got to the town hall the more and more we had to deal, a few of these rottes had acids in their stomach that destroyed their stomachs as soon as we hacked off their heads. After several close calls we were at the town hall and seen it was barricade from the inside, a good sign but quickly I noticed there was a hole in the wall where their defenses were breached, I stopped my two followers as I went inside, they didn't need to see what awaited inside, the women and children were held up inside, I soon found that none of they changed into rotters they were just mutilated beyond recognition., some were hanging by their feet from the ceiling after being skinned alive, blood covered the floor the walls it was everywhere. He stood up, a soft sound like a muffled cry got his attention, he walked into another room, there he seen it, a hooded figure skinning children alive and eating the skin, "So boss we finally meet, I wondered when they would send help, but alas it is too late." "Who are you?" "Who I am is not important, but what I am going to do to the remaining child if you are unable to stop me, that is what is important. She is a fine morsel that one." "Tell me why are you doing this?" "Well I am glad you asked, at first I decided to help this pitiful town by directing the scourge to different areas looking for this town, but after some time I was discovered, and the towns people thought I brought the scourge here, so like any other scared child they tried to have me killed, needless to say I escaped and I brought my wrath back to them, when I found out that these children barricaded themselves in the town hall I couldn't let them be turned into rotters to roam the land forever."
"So you spared them by skinning them and eating their flesh?" "Who is behind this?" "You surprise me, coming alone like this not like you at all now is it? Oh I see you are not alone after all are you?" with that he rose his hand towards the wall and a small fire erupted from his palm, desegregating the wall in a flash. As the smoke cleared I was not prepared to see what was under the rubble, what I thought to be Fluffie and Nagasae were dead, they were at the time unconscious. The next thing I knew I was standing in a crater surrounded by fire, after about fifteen minutes of searching I found Fluffie and Nagasae still out cold.
-Two Months Later-
After returning to the "office" we healed our wounds and took on a few low level jobs here and there. That was when I received a message from Mathis regarding this entire issue with rotters and liches, sometimes I wish the entire planet would explode then we wouldn't have to deal with this crap.
-Present-
I am awaken by the sound of birds for the first time in a week I have heard birds but that is a bad sign it means the rotters have left this area and gone on to do what they were made for. That's when I sense it, and jump from the tree in time to see it disintegrated, I land on to a new tree and look up to see the face that has been haunting my dreams for as long as I can remember.
