Khalahua Chronicles:

Pt.2: The History of Death

By: Cody O'Bryant

"In the beginning, it was black. There were no stars, no moon, no sun; all there was, was a Speck. This though, was no ordinary Speck; this Speck had the power to destroy anything and everything. Our god knew this, so when he created our universe, he threw it as far away from him as possible, hoping it would be lost forever.

***

On earth, people became civilized, and soon cities bloomed. After thousands of years the most important city in the universe was established. On a cold, dreary morning the City of Khalahua was born. At first it was only a couple of cabins, but overtime it grew. Today, it is a lively city with people from various backgrounds. No matter how different the citizens are though, they all share one dark secret: The city of Khalahua is the home of the Speck, and they are its guardians.

All that is known of the Speck has been passed down from elder to elder. They say it was no accident that the Speck ended up on earth. The elders say it knew that earth was going to produce the most vile and evil creatures ever, humans. According to the elders, the Speck knew how cruel and hell bent we would turn out, so it positioned itself so it would end up here, in the hands of those who would misuse it. No one comprehends how the elders have obtained this knowledge, and the elders show no signs of telling. The people take them at their word though, and that might not be a good thing.

Once more we shall visit the Speck. It is a small, black, circular object with a strange pattern carved onto it. It looks like writing, but the elders are unsure. The Speck is five inches in diameter, and weighs approximately seven pounds. There is a small, curious, circular indention on it though. The indention is around an inch in diameter, and is about one and a half inches deep; big enough for a finger to fit in up to the first knuckle. There is one thing about the indention though that gives it its aforementioned ‘curious' trait. The indention has slots on the side that hide small, blood-red razor sharp spikes. The spikes seem to come out when something is inserted into the indention. The Speck is currently being kept in a titanium box at an undisclosed location.

As it has been said, the citizens of Khalahua are the guardians of the Speck. In case it is misunderstood, they are not protecting it from outsiders, but outsiders (all of earth) from it. It is the people's duty to keep it safe, for it has been foretold that if it ever touches soil for an extended period of time (no one knows were it was before it was found), all life would end."

-- Excerpt from: Khalahua Township: 1923 Edition

"Some would say that Khalahua is cursed with the burden of the Speck, but I would say it is blessed.

After staying a few months in the wonderful town allowing injuries to heal, the people decided they could trust me. I encouraged their trust by helping them in every way they asked. Khalahua has even become a home away from home for me. They showed me their trust when they told me all about their dark secret. They even went as far to show the Speck to me. When I asked them what it did, they brought in a young woman and had her put one of her fingers in a little indention on the side. For a few seconds, nothing happened, and then she turned to dust, bones and all!

They call the little indention ‘The Mouth', because the Speck supposedly feeds on all the energy on earth. According to the elders, the Speck sucks out everything and everyone's energy, and, they say that it is the cause of Death. I believe I can confirm this just due to the data I've seen. The city of Khalahua has a higher death rate than any city in the U.S., there are more deaths on record in Khalahua per year than any other city in a developed country, and no one has made in past the age of 50 since the founding of the city.

As I mentioned early, ask any other person, and they would say that to be responsible for that kind of power would be a curse; I though, would consider myself blessed. In fact, I would like to become blessed with the responsibility, no, I want to.

I have seen the power, and I want it."

-- Excerpt from: The diary of William Boon

Dated: August 20, 1943

"The year of 1944 will forever go down in history as one of Khalahua's darkest times. After all the hospitality we showed William Boon...well, can't say anyone doesn't regret it now.

On April 11, 1944, William Boon returned to Khalahua with a hundred of his companions and demanded we give him the Speck. We asked him why he wanted it, and he laughed saying ‘To take over the world of course!' When we brought up how he expected to use it he paused for a second and then muttered ‘I've been studying it. I know how to contain it.' It was clear he was mad with ambition, for we had tried to contain its power and failed miserably every time. This time though, we were wrong.

The seven months that ensued brought a secret, death filled war. For the Khalahuans anyway. Boone lost only fifty - eight men the entire war, all but sixteen from hunger. All eyes were on World War Two, so even our closes neighbors had no idea what was going on. Finally after our population had been halved, we gave in. Boone received the orb, and even darker times followed.

Most everything that happened next is pure speculation. Our brightest minds have run through every possible scenario and came up with the most likely. The biggest mystery though, is if Boon's physical being ever came into contact with the Speck. On the other hand, we do know that Boon tested his methods and ideals on his own men. Every night we would hear screams coming from his came not even ten miles out of town. Eventually one of his men escaped, and begged our help crying that he didn't know what Boon had done, but that he was insane, and killed almost everyone. A small group consisting of the stranger, our two strongest young males, and all but one of the elders made way to Boon's camp.

They found the camp a black hole - literally. There was a rip in the universe located in the middle of the camp, and it was slowly sucking in everything. There was only one body there still breathing, and that was Boon's, except that it wasn't. The black that was radiating from the hole was slowly covering his body, consuming him.

‘So that's were you got to Warrick,' chuckled a barley human voice, ‘You decide to fulfill your mission early!'

‘Of course master, I was bored waiting.'

‘That's interesting, good thing I wasn't wrong, because if I was your impatience would've killed me. We're going to have to grind responsibility into you aren't we?' At this all the color drained from Warrick's face, and the elders sensing what was going to happen turned to run. ‘Warrick, since you got lucky, try and keep them here. Ah, know what forget it, friends, take your stupid Speck back!' And with that he hurled the Speck through the air. As old as they were, the elders showed phenomenal agility in racing to catch the Speck, but unfortunately their dying bodies weren't fast enough, and the Speck crashed into the earth. The elders, being the eldest, died almost instantly, and by the time one of them picked it up, both of the young men looked as if they were eighty. Boon watched all this with a triumphant sorrow in his eyes, and then he turned to Warrick and snapped ‘Come.' Then they walked into the hole and were gone. When Boon passed through the rip, a ripple manifested, towering anything nearby. The hole was gone, along with Boon and Warrick.

A few concerned citizens had followed the party, and witnessed everything that occurred. They tried to help the once young men, but they died as soon as they made it back to the city. The witnesses did not physically touch the Speck, but instead wrapped it in the dying men's clothing. We believe this has some significance not yet deduced.

The Speck was relocated, and guarded heavier than ever.

Since then, Khalahua has been left in peace."

-- Excerpt from: The Khalahua Township: 1973 Edition

"By now, everyone lives in fear. Ever since the infamous Boon incident, dark creatures have roamed the world. Our best guess as to what they are is this: They are the souls of the people we have offered to the Speck, and something Boon did triggered their release. As a common curiosity we had always wondered what happened to the lost ones, and well, now we know. Even if someone had been able to guess this, would they have foretold the mutilation? No eyes, ears, or noses; they're deformed snakes, tasting, seeing, and smelling with their tongues. No one deserves such a punishment for Boon's crimes.

The lost ones just roam they earth mindlessly, all we have ever seen them do is eat, and that is the worst of all. The lost ones eat others hearts; perhaps they are trying to regain their lost life.

On another note, the Speck is still under armed guard; the Speck is watched twenty-four seven. Each day is broken down into six four-hour shifts. This is another thing we all live in fear of, that someone else might harness its power like William Boon. That is why there are always eight eyes on it and its surroundings. Few people wonder whether or not it'll do any good. There main argument is that even half our city couldn't stop boon, so what makes us so sure four men could stop another crazy lunatic?

We do still sacrifice people to our god. No matter how great our fear of the lost ones, we most keep our god appeased. It is said that if he is ever angry, there would be hell to pay for all people.

Finally, I will probably end up dead if it is ever found out that I know about his, but...we have plans, a manuscript of sorts, for a bomb that will harness the Specks power. The might of this bomb will be the greatest ever seen. It will not be strong enough to destroy the planet, but strong enough to wipe small countries off the face of the map with ease,"

"We do not know who assembled these documents, were they came from, or even how they ended up on Quantico's doorstep waiting for us, but as you can all assume our interests have been piqued. I want you all to be in Khalahua tomorrow."

Thanks!

Tolkien, really?

On a sadder note, I've come to a major construction zone on the highway of this series, unfortunately all lanes are closed into further notice. Hopefully it will be soon...
