(splayed fingers rest against my brow in a meat curtain:
a mild attempt to distract my forehead from the jealous sun
and i imagine my freckles resemble the consistency of dry soil
as swallowed words threaten to burst like bird guts after they've
swallowed rice

i can't remember what the door sounded like
or how your face looked as you exited the bait shop
only the dust of a backwater road and my lungs in
great swells beneath your feet

it was one of those afternoons as
your pupils ascended like new moons,
above our washed-out strip of highway
and maybe toward the wave caps
way off in the endless space
behind my head)

pale pale blue like the cancerous ceilings of the american dream
pale pale blue like the eggshells of some bird i can't remember
pale pale blue like a moon dog, lazy in the heat of summer

and as i stare into the electronic crawl of the computer screen
i wonder how anything can be so hot and so ******* cold
