Broken Oath

"I'll love you till I'm dead inside," Damien said.

We were standing on the roof of my apartment building. The wind blew his long black hair against my face, tickling me. I pulled him closer.

"Do you mean that?" I whispered. It was so easy to say something you didn't mean. I had to be sure his words were real.

"I swear," he said, "and if I break my oath, may my soul wonder the earth for all eternity, never finding peace."

"I love you, Damien," I said, and brought my lips to his. I swear in that kiss I felt warmth coming from his dead, cold body. He playfully bit my lip with his little fangs. I giggled and bit him back.

We spent the night on the top of the building, talking, laughing, dedicating ourselves to one another over and over again. When that evil orange glow appeared on the horizon I grew sad, for I knew that Damien would have to leave. We gave each other one final embrace, and promised to meet tomorrow night at the same spot. Then he rose into the air, his black coat billowing around him like a pair of great, powerful wings. I watched as he flew off to his hiding spot. When I could no longer see him, I turned and descended to my apartment.

The following night, I stood on the rooftop awaiting Damien. He never came. Nor did he show up the next night, or the whole week after.

"Something has happened to him," I said to myself as I paced my living room, tears streaming down my face. "He didn't make it back to his hideout before sunrise. Or some stupid vampire hater tracked him down."

I thought I'd go crazy waiting for him to return. I told myself that he knew I loved him. Whatever had happened to him, he knew that. It brought me some peace.

One night, my friend Monica called.

"What," I said, when she told me the news. "Are you sure....Ok. Thanks." I hung up the phone, and stood still before the kitchen window. Rain was pouring down it, creating little stripes across my reflection. Monica's words replayed through my head. At first they brought no emotion, but with every repeat, I began to feel the pain. I grabbed the flower vase that sat on the window sill-the vase Damien had given me-and hurled it against the wall. It shattered into a thousand blue pieces of blue glass. Destruction felt good, but I needed to bring more.

I raced from my apartment and down to the street, where I hailed a cab.

The club at which Monica had seen him was packed when I arrived. Hundreds of people in skin tight clothes threw themselves about wildly to the blearing music. The blue and purple lights gave them a ghostly effect. Strobe lights illuminated there faces briefly, before throwing them into darkness, then repeating the pattern over again.

I walked slowly through the crowd searching every face, but none belonged to Damien. Perhaps he had already left. No, something told me he was still here. I needed to keep looking.

The next moment, I saw his long black hair. He was dancing a few yards away in the midst of a sea of people.

A blonde girl was dancing next to him, sliding her body up and down his.

Everything froze. I wanted to look away, wanted to close my eyes and open them, only to find myself in bed, dreaming. But that didn't happen.

Damien looked up and saw me. He stopped dancing, and his ***** did too. She looked at me, then back at Damien accusingly. He whispered something to her, then moved towards me.

"I'm so sorry," he said, "I know what this looks like, but it's not. I swear. She's prey, that's all. I needed to seduce her so I could-"

He reached out to touch me. I pushed him away.

"Don't, Damien," I said. Tears lay just behind my eyes.

"How could you? I thought...I thought-"

"It was special," Damien said, his eyes pleading. "Please understand."

I sucked up my tears. For him to call it special after the way he acted enraged me. There was one more question I needed to ask, one final thing I needed to know.

"What you said on the roof that night, about how you'd love me till you were dead inside...did you mean that?"

"Yes," he said, pleadingly. "With all my heart."

That was all I needed to know. I reached out and wrapped my arms around him. He engulfed me in his. I felt his entire body exhaled with relief.

That's when I pulled the pencil out of my pocket, and stabbed him in the back.

Damien gasped. His body went ridged, then vanished. Around me lay a pile of dust, the form a vampire takes in death.

Several people, one of them Damien's *****, screamed and began pushing there way to the doors, but most hadn't noticed and continued dancing.

I turned and walked slowly towards the bar. I didn't want to go home just yet. The chaos of the club was a welcomed distraction and enough to keep me from thinking about my broken heart and the guilt that I knew would eventually come.

As I sipped my drink, I wondered what really did happen to a soul after it died. Did it go to a peaceful place? And if you betrayed an oath on your soul, did it really roam the earth, never finding peace? Or was that just empty words. For Damien's sake, I hoped it was.

loved the ending

It would seem that even a vampire can fall prey to a woman scorned. Loved your ending, did not see it coming.

Entertaining.
