The gray wolf is plagued with ravenous hunger Its coat sticks to his ribs like a paste In the dead of winter he has not found any prey He trots through the powder snow under a full moon It's not just him he has to think of He has a starved pack of followers following behind They are light on their feet Making no noise moving through the woods, quietly A light breeze of cold, crisp air passes through The stagnant light of the moon is ever-glowing The dead trees are the only witnesses to these stealthy predators The stars of the night sky illuminate the blackness of it All is calm of the night except for the antsy pack The pack thirsts for warm blood Hungers for freshly killed meat Their eyes glow in the darkness leaving an eerie feeling in the forest Their breath releases small bursts of steam into the air Their teeth shine in the night with a pearl white glow The followers get restless and pace back and forth as the leader pauses The leader remains calm and collective, keeping his wits The he hears it, as do the others A large elk, strayed from his herd walking trying to find his way Like assassins the pack moves stealthily through the woods splitting up There an elk is, large enough to feed the pack, in a clearingLittle does it know it is being hunted The wolves surround the elk, staying in the darkness of the forest The leader with swift accuracy dashes at the elk and lunges at its neck The others follow grabbing the elk by the legs and dragging it to the ground With once crushing bite, the leader kills its prey The pack howls at the bright moon to claim and celebrate their kill Copyright 2008 Shawn Dally |
