Khalahua Chronicles: Pt.1: Welcome to Khalahua By: Cody O'Bryant
When the birds began singing around 6:30am on July the eighth, it looked like it was going to be a great day. The red sun was rising, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. The high was seventy - seven degrees, and the wind was blowing northeast at 2mph, just enough to create a nice breeze. Everyone was in a good mood (which is saying something considering that it was a Monday). Everybody in the town felt compelled to do good deeds. Now I'm not really sure why this was. Perhaps they knew what was going to happen and wanted to do good deeds to make up for any past wrongs. I do not know why they did what they did, but I do know that it's a good thing, because for almost all it would be their last day on earth.
*** Around noon was when the first tell - tale signs appeared. Any foreshadowing signs though, went unnoticed. Take for example the wildlife, all of it was gone. The only mobile creatures left in the city of Khalahua were humans. Another fine example would be the weather. If people actually paid attention to the world outside their mind, they would've noticed that it was around fifty degrees, and the wind was blowing southwest at approximately 37mph. Nothing was as it should be. If only someone saw the signs and read them correctly, and then gathered all their loved ones and got out of town; maybe then I could tell you that this tale had a happy ending, but unfortunately no. It is, in fact, due to this ignorance that Khalahua had to die.
*** Time was edging on 5:30, when even the most ignorant noticed that something was wrong. There was no sun in the sky, and for that matter, no moon or stars. The entire city was covered in black. To top it off, the whole city was suffering a black out, and a strange one at that. Not a single light in the city worked. This included headlights on cars, flashlights; any light you could imagine was out. Everything was mass chaos. Every citizen of Khalahua was trying to drive out of town. Can you imagine the scene? With no lights to guide, the city was one big car wreck. At 5:45, They came. They had arrived to do His bidding, and it had to be done...perfectly. If there was one mistake, He would kill them along with Khalahua. They were creatures of the night. Dark and wild, They roam the earth doing what They want, waiting for Him to call. They truly are terrible things. I shall try and describe them to you, so you can decide just how terrible They are. Their figures are those of humans, but They are not solid. They are shaped black smoke held together by His magic. They have no eyes, ears or noses, and their mouths are filled with razor sharp teeth, and They have the tongues of serpents. They'll feed on anything, but their preferred entrée is the human heart. They truly are terrible things... One of the old philosophers would likely say It can be inferred that They have something to do with the shadow over the city, they would only be half right. They serve Him. He is the one that cast the shadow over Khalahua. If you are hoping for an explanation on Him, sadly I cannot give you one. All I am allowed to say is: Think of the deadliest thing you know, He is 100 times more deadly than that; Think of the most deranged thing you know, He is 1000 times more deranged than that. Forming a picture? I'd love to say more, really, but if I did, He'd feed me to them. Sorry to digress from the epic tale, but I just wanted you to feel some sympathy for the people of Khalahua. You have to feel at least a little bad for them with thousands of Them hanging around. At 5:50, They began to feast. It was in no way a pretty scene. Bodies lying everywhere, deep black holes in their chests, pale white faces, clothes stained from the pools of blood they're lying in...it truly was a dark day for Khalahua. Fortunately, being unable to see or hear, They are not the best hunters, so there was a slight chance for life. In one way or another, every single citizen of Khalahua was trying to make their way out of the darkened city. This of course means that there are tens of thousands of stories that need to be told. Perhaps one day, I can share with you the happiest, and the deadliest. Ah, here I go digressing again! When one hits six hundred and five, they start going a little senile, and began talking about un-related matters...sorry. Can you imagine the scene? Blind, deaf, blood-thirsty creatures trying to hunt equally blind prey while He watches over. It does have a comic taste to it... At 6:00pm the birds flew in. The birds, in this old man's opinion, are worst than Them. Every time the birds inhale, vast amounts of oxygen are removed from the air, and when the exhale...poisonous fumes are spat into the air; terrible, terrible things. Imagine how horrible this was for the people, they have already seen friends and family have their hearts ripped from their chests, but now they have to worry about breathing in poison or suffocating. Somewhere near 6:30, half the population had been eradicated. The other five-thousand and some odd people had given up on finding an egress, and had instead taken to hiding and praying. Near 6:45, two things happened, the darkness surrounding Khalahua began to constrict, this added more fuel to the fire for our dear citizens; the hunting ground for Them became smaller, and any exit was impossible now, because if you crossed the boundary of light and dark, you would be vaporized. The other thing I aforementioned is even worse, because He joined in the mayhem. I still have nightmares about the look of glee on his face as he slaughtered all of those poor people. He simply had to glance at someone, and they'd burst into flames, explode, implode, suffocate, bleed dry, etc. Those who witnessed his power gave up all hope then and there. Those were the smart ones, they realized that Khalahua was dying, and volunteered to go quietly, if not painfully. He does not feel, so no mercy was given, and every last person died horrifically. At 7:30 (to the second), it was over, Khalahua was dead.
*** When 6:30 am came around again, there were no birds singing, no people complaining about having to go to work, no trees stretching their limbs and saying ‘Hello' to the world, there was nothing. The entire world outside of Khalahua knew nothing about what had happened the previous evening, and as things go, they never would. A secret organization in the U.S. government would create a some-what believable story, and then proceed to start a conspiracy rumor. Only three people that were not involved would learn of what really happened. The scientist would have something to talk about for ages though, because it rained every single place on earth all that day. It's almost as if Mother Earth was crying... In Khalahua, the streets ran with blood on this sad day. Bodies were everywhere; He could barley walk without stepping on one of them. As he strolled, He admired his work; after all, it was very efficient. He also considered what he had done an act of charity; He had made the earth better by wiping a portion of ignorance off the earth. He gave the decimated city one more glance, and then vanished. He preaches against ignorance, yet He too is ignorant, the hypocrite. If He had paid attention to the details of Khalahua, He would have noticed that the Welcome to Khalahua sign read: Population: 10, 625, and then He would've known something was wrong. If He wasn't so proud and had actually double checked his work, He would've noticed that there were only 10,620 bodies. That's right, apparently five people were smart enough to see the holes and make it out. I don't know what to do. Should I tell Him? Should I forget all about it? I know that what he did was necessary, that the people were truly ignorant, dabbling in things that should remain untouched, but can five people really do that much damage? Of course not, the manuscript was destroyed; we saw what was left of it. Okay then, I'm going to keep mum. God help me, because if I am wrong, this is the beginning of the end for all of us.
