I could feel its cold breathe on the back of my neck. The chill of it sent shivers down my spine. I didn’t want to look. I knew exactly what this thing was. It’s unnatural being twisted with hatred. Just the presence of it made the room cold. It lived in the darkness, unexpected light would kill it. I always hated the dark. Why did I start now to face my fears? The day I summon up the courage to turn the light off and this happens. Why was I cursed with this gift? I never asked for it. Who would want to see the twisted beings of the night?

My mother always told me that there isn’t anything in the dark that isn’t there in the light, but she didn’t have this gift. She couldn’t see what I could see. She decided to give me pills to stop them; they did work for a while. The medication made them mad, they became violent; they didn’t want to let me go. So I told her that they were gone and I didn’t need the medicine anymore. I stopped taking them and creatures left me alone.

Of course I was only a small child then. Now I have learnt to control my gift. I can switch it on and off like you would a lamp. At times I did see them when I didn’t want to. But now I’m used to the surprise visits. Not all of these creatures are bad, there are good ones, once that want guidance. They have a warm air about them, that’s how you can tell between the two. Whenever it suddenly gets cold I turn off my gift.

My skin has grown numb, it was so cold that my breath condensed as I exhaled. This was one of the bad ones. The room was deathly cold, my blankets no longer kept me warm. My bed whined as my body furiously shivered. I could feel its cold hands grip me like a vice. It pinned me to the bed but I still kept my eyes shut tight.

“Look at me!” Its voice had its own echo and sounded like he was talking under water. “Your only making me annoyed. It would only get worse. Just open your eyes and look at me!”

I kept my eyes shut, I wasn’t going to grant its wish. I felt its jagged nails dig into my skin; it was like stabbing an apple with your nail. Except I was the apple and he was the cruel nail. Funny, my skin made that uncanny popping noise that the apples skin does when it releases from the pressure. I could feel my blood trickling down my arms; it was meek warmth against my cold skin. His nails were like poison darts. Poison travelled through my veins and attacked my nervous system, the pain was too unbearable. I screamed out in agony but it only came out as a whisper. The creatures cackle echoed in my ear.

“All you have to do is open your eyes. Look into mine and the pain will be gone.” It coaxed desperately. “There will be no more pain, no more cold.”

I knew the consequence of looking into this things eyes. Just one look into them made you go crazy. It had a psychotic pleasure in torturing you. Looking into them showed you his past victims and their torment. Each one killing themselves in different ways. We never die accidentally, everything is done on purpose. Car crashes are planned, technical difficulties are planned, and even being murdered is planned. Sometimes they just cut themselves; they escape any desperate way they can. But there’s a twist, there always is a twist. This thing devours your soul, for all eternity you see the suffering of thousands of victims, all replayed over and over again.

My eyes were shut so tight that they began to ache I don’t think I can stand it any longer. The cold, the pain, it’s too much to bear. I can’t take it longer, I want to be free. I let out small whimpers of defeat. The creature laughs its victory, that cold soulless laugh. At last its victim has given up…I have given up. I slowly open my eyes, my vision blurred. I could feel the creature leaning down closer to me. Its cold breath blowing on my face, its smile bearing its yellow rotted teeth. Then there was a ray of hope; my room flooded with light. The creature screeches as it begins to disappear. Someone storms through my door. My eyes automatically squint as they adjust to the sudden brightness. I look at the figure before me, my saviour, my angel of light, my mother. All the sudden its dark again. I fall into unconsciousness. My body had grown weak from blood loss and hypothermia. But now I can rest knowing that the creature is gone. The creature most commonly known as the grim reaper.
