He lifted his dark head, his nostrils flaring with the scent of her. He could smell her fear, her knowledge of what was to come. He smiled, baring his white teeth, his canines longer, sharper than an average human. Her eyes, stormy gray, were wide and frightened. Her hair, so dark with wisps of white at her temples, was wild and fell into her face. Her breast rose and fell with each heavy, ragged breath. Her hands, so slim and graceful, clenched until the skin was white at the knuckles. He could see her pulse fluttering wildly at the base of her neck.

She stood so close, close enough that their breaths mingled, and he could feel his soul reach towards hers. Her soul shied away, frightened by the dark intensity of his, her light dimming in fear. He pulled her body close, wrapping strong arms around her, his lips brushing the throbbing rhythm at her neck. A sigh escaped her lips, whispering in his ear. She breathed his name, his True Name, the one only his mate would know.

“Da’vain.”

His eyes closed tight, his breath warm on her neck, as something inside, deep and tense, relaxed. As though ropes were loosened, a weight lifted off his shoulders. Her soul no longer winced away from his, but wrapped itself around him. Curled into him, tying herself around him for all time.

He felt the instant connection, her path to his mind. His heart. But until he whispered her Name, it would be a one-way road. She would have access to him, but he would be closed off from her forever. There would be no other chance; he must do it now.

She pulled away, her stormy gaze meeting his golden eyes, fear of abandonment evident in her stare. She was waiting for him to finish it. To bind them together. A deep breath was what he needed, but the sight of her stole the air from his lungs. Her name was no more than a puff of air, but he managed to say it, with all the love and adoration in his heart.

“Va’yon.”

Wisps of light surrounded them, reaching into their hearts, twining and wrapping around them, binding them together. Sighs escaped their lips as they met and merged.

How could he have ever survived without her?

How could she have ever thought to survive without him?

Their souls brushed against each other, curling around each other, leaving then meeting. Their lips parted and their eyes met, silver met gold and fingers entwined. A smile pulled at his mouth, growing into a laughing grin. He picked her up high, swinging her around, laughing. She threw her head back, her eyes closed but her laugh ringing out into the suddenly bright night.

Laughter became desire and the desperate need for each other overwhelmed both. Bodies merged, skin slick with sweat; and their breaths mingling, the outside world was of no consequence to them.

They were one for all time. And they would live happily ever after.

How could they not?
