1500 days.  That's what the joke was, 1500 days.  One Thousand Five Hundred, give or take a few of course. Doug told her that he had never had a relationship last longer than that.  He gave up on the woman at that point in time.

Michelle just looked at him.  She knew that he was teasing, but still.  It wasn't something that she really wanted to hear.  He asked her one time if they would be together when they were 50.  Hmm, wouldn‘t that be up to him?  She knew that she would be there for him.

They had a very unusual relationship.  They were best friends on the surface, but there was more than that brewing underneath.  They had fire, they had passion, but they couldn't give in to each other.  At least not fully.  Despite everything, they had other commitments in their lives.  But it was Michelle's biggest hope, to one day be able to fully give herself to Doug and fully get his love in return.

Right now, both of them had other people in their lives.  They knew that they shouldn't exist, and they had both tried being good.  Several times, they had both agreed to be just best friends, but they were always pulled back to each other.  It was good, it was familiar and it just felt right.

There was a cycle to their madness.  Especially with him.  He would go through moods, ignoring her completely for several days on end.  Then he would come hold her and love on her.  She knew to take it for what it was.  After all, she wasn't a bucket of happiness all the time either.  She was just selfish and wanted him more.

She knew her long term commitment could and should be over.  She was tired of her spouse's constant oral abuse.  But she had never been by herself and she knew that it was easier on the kids to have their father there.  She did love him at one point in time, but she needed to live for herself now.  She had given up so much of her life for him, and he never seemed to meet her halfway.  Maybe it was just her thinking; maybe she had unrealistic expectations.  All she knew was that she was unhappy and she didn't want to live the rest of her life this way.

As for him, the kids kept him tied.  He loved his children so and knew that he didn't want to be apart from them.  Michelle didn't know exactly how he felt about his wife.  She only got bits and pieces of the story, and she always got the negative stories.  As it was, she knew that Doug and his wife had been together for about 3 years now.

Michelle and Doug talked all the time.  They talked about everything.  No subject was taboo, except where their relationship was going.  They never talked about that.  Ever.  One day, Doug mentioned how long his grandparents had been married.  Both Michelle and him were in awe of the long term commitment and how long of a time that was.  He calculated it down to the day.

"That's 19,710 days.  Can you imagine?" he asked Michelle.  "I go for about 1500 days and I am through."

They giggled knowing that it was a joke.  Sort of.  Michelle knew that he should never have married his ex-wife.  That relationship had been doomed from the beginning.  But as it was, he had never had a long term relationship before.

Michelle wondered if the 1500 day curse would apply to his current wife.  It was food for thought, but she tried not to think about it too much.  After all, she didn't know where their relationship was going.  It was the one forbidden topic.  But in the back of her brain she thought "There's only about 600 more days to go."  Bad thoughts, she was sure.

Michelle also wondered if the 1500 day curse applied to her.  Would he tired of her and kick her out of his life?  Did she get 3000 days because he only saw her half the time?  Did she get 6000 days because he liked to ignore her some days?  She wasn't sure.

Michelle knew that she loved Doug, loved him deeply.  She wasn't sure exactly what he felt for her, but she knew that he loved her too.  He did put up with a lot of nonsense from her.  But she put up with a lot of nonsense from him too.  She wished that she knew what the future would hold, but no one is psychic like that.  All she knew is that she was happiest when she was with him.  She had never known such happiness before.

As for the 1500 days.....she has about 1050 left to go.  Maybe she'd get lucky and be the one to break the curse.
