Keith and Joe, two young lads, started running through the tree and rock littered field. The sun was high in the clear blue, cloudless sky, but that offered no protection. They ran through the dirt patches; and when they went threw the thick, green grass, they were reminded of what haunted them. Sweat dripped down from their baseball caps. They were just walking to Joe’s home from their practice. But they made one serious mistake: Keith decided that it would be quicker to cut through the field and forest instead of taking the roadside path.

The two, rather small, boys ran furiously with bats in their hands; trembling from what they had just seen. It had been two minutes, but they weren’t prepared to stop soon. They had heard earlier:

Green, fuzzy, has four legs, and kills you if it falls from a tree.

But these words they did not heed— they took these words as a mere riddle; that was another mistake that was made. It was a calm day at their practice and one of the kids was riddling about it, when all of the others were watching him intently curious as to why he would speak of it. That was last week, however, and this week he didn’t show.

Keith had been wondering what happened to him, whether it was a coincidence, or the other kids were right. But now, he left those worries behind and was putting all his attention to the matter at hand (not his bat— hand is figuratively speaking).

They both dropped their belonging while quivering at the terrible sight of the beast; but after just a few seconds of running, they turned around and sped back to their items to grab a bat— only a bat for both time and weight. That was when they had come only feet away from it; after they had turned around to get the bats, the beast was closer to the belongings. How? They did not know.

They started heading into an area more dense with trees now; but they feared to climb a single one. They now had no clue where they had gone to and they also had no clue where the beast had gone (they’re really dumb kids). They decided to go a little further and see if they could find any place that they knew of (of course, they know a lot of places in the middle of no where). They came to a large wall of stone that towered straight up. They conversed about climbing it to see which way was out, and agreed on doing so.

As they began to climb the rock face, they heard rustling from behind them. They turned quickly to see it there awaiting them. They hopped down and started running along the side of the stone wall. They started going downwards and soon came to a cove-like place in the rocks. They turned around again and saw that they were cornered— there was no way out.

They did notice one option however, and Joe whispered that to Keith. There stood beside them a tall tree. This tree went up to the top of the stone wall and the ground at the top of the wall was accessible that way. They began to climb the tree which towered over them. But as Keith glanced up to find his next grab, he noticed the four-legged creature high in the tree. As it came down and impaled the two boys with its dark, oak legs, it was fully uncovered— the appalling pool table.

...
I heard that old riddle a long time ago. Once I read it I began to chuckle. I love tongue in cheek humor.
