Small waves lapped at Krystal’s feet as she walked along the beach. The white sand reflected the suns rays into her eyes. She squinted her ocean blue eyes and walked on. To ease the reflection she decided to walk on the path. As she strolled down the path a small breeze blew tresses of her black hair about. A whistle came from a car as it drove by, Krystal took no notice she was too busy daydreaming.

Before she knew it she stood before her small apartment building. She pulled a single key from her jean pocket and fitted it into the rusted keyhole. The lock gave way with one small click. She slowly made her way up the twisting stairs, the slapping noise her sandals made echoed off the flaking walls. Her apartment was on the top floor, her favourite number, seventeen. She pulled out another key from her pocket and jiggled it about in the doorknob. Again a small click sounded and Krystal pushed against her door. Her lounge room wasn’t too fancy, a single torn couch sat before a crappy old television. She sat herself down on the couch with a sigh. Her reflection in the sleeping television stared back at her.

After thoroughly combing her hair with her fingers she pulled herself up from the couch. The kitchen wasn’t any better than the lounge room; you could say it was worse. The bench tops were a shocking green, the cupboards were a sickly yellow, and as for her fridge, it was covered in magnets. Krystal opened the fridge door in hope to find something to eat. All was crushed when all that there was were a couple of old chines containers and a carton of sour milk. She closed the door with a huff and decided to just have a glass of water. The water ran a rusty brown before turning clear.

It was five-o-clock in the morning when Krystal decided to go for a jog. She pulled on tight black shorts and a plain white top. She looked around for her jogging shoes to find them hiding under the bed. She left the apartment building with low spirits; what would make this day any different. She pondered a bit before coming to a conclusion. She turned left instead of right, if there was to be any change in her life it might as well begin with this. Krystal looked into the windows of the shops as she jogged by. As she stared into one window a black and red halter neck dress caught her eye. As she searched for a prise tag she collided with another woman. Krystal fell to the ground with bone breaking force. She lay dazed before trying to get up but quickly gave up. Her knee was in terrible pain.

“Here take my hand.” The woman offered.

She stared up at the person that now offered their hand in help. Light grey eyes stared at her; she accepted the woman’s hand. Small ringlets of blonde hair framed the woman’s face, the full rosy lips curved to form a perfect smile.

“I’ll take you back to my place.” She smiled. “It’s just around the corner.”

“I’m so sorry…I wasn’t watching where I was going.” Krystal apologized.

“All is fine as long as your not too badly damaged.”

The woman led Krystal down the street. They stopped before a large complex. The woman pressed one of the buzzers.

“Who is it?” A crackly voice chimed.

“It’s Elanora, may you please buzz me in.” the woman chimed back.

A buzzing noise came from the speaker and Elanora pushed the door open. The corridor had a peaceful air about it. The stairs were carpeted and the walls were free of graffiti. The duo carefully made their way up the stairs. After twenty minutes of climbing they managed to get to the third floor. Elanora pulled a key chain from her pocket and unlocked the door. Krystal entered the apartment with a gasp. The lounge room was light blue with white skirtings. The lounge and two matching chairs were a deep ocean blue. The wall unit that held a large plasma television was white. The Kitchen was even more spectacular; silver cupboards with a black stone bench top. The pain from her knee soon sent her buckling.

Elanora had just finished wrapping the bandage around Krystal’s knee when the phone rang. Elanora quickly answered it.

“Hello…yes…no…alright…I’ll be there tomorrow…I’m feeling sick…alright…bye.” Mellinda hung up the phone and looked back at Krystal. “Don’t worry it wasn’t any one important. The bandages aren’t too tight I hope.”

Krystal shook her head. “Perfect.”

“That’s good. Did you want a drink or something? I have water, apple juice or fanta.”

“Just water thankyou. I don’t want to be a bother. I’m sure you have plans.”

Elanora didn’t answer her but just went along with her business. She handed Krystal a glass of cold water and looked at the bandage.

“No I don’t have plans, I’ve got the day off…any way I don’t want you walking on that knee.” Elanora smiled. “Oh I forgot.”

She headed back towards the kitchen and opened the freezer door. She came back with an ice pack. She placed it on the bandaged knee. “That should make it better.”
