"Ah, now there's an easy one to answer. You see it's all about perception. The people that raise us determine how we see life. They create our reality. Oh, not our total reality. Learning that fire will burn us is something that we learn on our own, and there are many other experiences that we modify our reality with. But the core of our belief, which is all we are really, what we believe - comes from our role models A good example of this would be a young man or woman that is raised in an environment that is full of abuse. Physical, mental, it really doesn't matter. They grow up believing that this is a normal way to function. Whereas a person that was raised in a loving environment would think that affection, and open caring is normal. Why, I knew a fellow that spent the first twenty-five years of his life thinking that the entire human population could see clearly for about fifty feet, and then everything went blurry. He never questioned his bad vision, nor did his teachers or his parents. Imagine his surprise when he went to have his eyes examined for the first time. Imagine his surprise when he put on glasses for the first time." In fact, just the other day..." "Dad." "I got out of the tub and was finishing drying myself off. I had just tossed..." "Dad." "Yes, son?" "The question dad. What's your answer?" "Now you know I'm gonna get there; I always do, I just have to give you enough information to judge my answer. I'm almost there. Now where was I? Oh, yeah, I tossed a towel over my shoulders and just stood there. Thinking. You know, sometimes you just have to stop and wonder who you are. What you are. Are you even real? Are we just going through the motions? Are we programmed to do what we do? Whatever that is? Does our day-to-day movement go beyond DNA? What about money? Think about it. Dollar bills and coins are man made; they don't exist in the natural world. What is it? We trade it. But it's not like dirt. We didn't find it; we made it up. We literally made it up. In the beginning it was a guarantee of exchange for precious metal - silver then gold. Now, it's pretty much just paper - with no guarantees behind it. It's not like the products and services wouldn't be out there if there weren't money. Money is the method to traffic products and services. So do we need today's money? I don't think so; I think money is like an accountability ticket. People think there is a difference between cash and credit - but is there? Isn't money just a pretty tradable I.O.U. - just a physical type of credit you can carry in your pocket? It is just paper, right? Oops, I'm drifting away here. So, what I'm getting at is, do we imagine ourselves? Do we exist beyond our relationship to each other?" "Matrix. That's the movie Matrix." "Yes, but did you, or any of your friends watch beyond the flashing lights and wonderful camera trickery? Did you understand the show? The message? I'm not saying that it is as extreme as that, but we, individually, exist only inside our own heads. One cannot, I cannot be absolutely certain that I didn't imagine you into existence. Crazy folks see strange things all the time that are normal and very real to them. Perhaps they're normal and we are not. Perhaps they understand how to manipulate their world and we cannot understand it. Isn't what we believe to be true, true? "Dad?" "The answer? Okay. Your question is: If you could only pick one thing that you said that you regretted, what would it be? The answer is easy. Back many years ago you came running to me while I was sitting in the kitchen. "Dad! Dad! Look!" you were rubbing your eyes in front of me. "What is it son?" "Can you see them?" "Can I see what?" "The sparkles! They look like stars!" "No son, I can't see them." You rubbed your eyes some more, "How about now? Can you see the sparkles now?" "No son, I think they're just in your eyes." "Now, as I grow older, and have come to realize that so much of what I am; in fact, all that I am is within me, I wonder how your life might have been different if I had answered, yes. Even if only briefly, perception is our reality - what would your reality have become with even a short period of belief that you could share images with others? What secrets could you have discovered while your mind was unbridled?"Copyright 2008 David Neve |
