 Letting Us Die

Just yesterday I remembered myself begging for death
But now today I am pleading for
just one more precious breath

They emerged from the sky
With huge wings and fangs, they flew by

Enormous creatures spawned from hell
It was the devil's wrath as far as anyone could tell

There was a young girl out in the street
They picked her up and slaughtered her like meat

Her body parts descended back down like rain
Her blood poured. like water out of a drain

But this was just the beginning of the end
And there is nothing I can do, I can't help mend

All of the injured that lay dying on the street
I'm not sure whether this is reality or my own horrid dream

One thing's for sure it doesn't seem right
All of the soldiers have their gas masks fit snug, tight

They just stand there watching us die
Their bayonets glaring like a candle, so bright

That was very unusual, and compelling. I wonder if a great emergency would wake people out of their depression or apathy, make them want to keep living if theres something to survive against. Thought provoking

;-)

This is a very cool poem, it's exciting and dark. It's hard to find something so dark; everything seems to be so darn happy most of the time!

Wow buddy, that's one of the best poem I've read in a long long time. Interesting subject, gripping style, imagery is crystal clear, it makes you think and judge your values... Yep, truly loved it!

Pretty well-written.

European soldiers in combat (throughout the 1600's - 1700's) came to mind with the word 'bayonet', but before that you mentioned 'gas masks' and those weren't in use until the 1900's, I think, so virtually a different type of soldier came to mind, as did the first two World Wars... but then I remembered that in World War I some sort of bayonet was used so that's the final picture I got. So you did a good job in imagery.

The horrors of massacring passing towns/villages came through; very unjust...

And the first 2 lines brought forth a great truth. I suppose when swamped with worries one can sometimes yearn for death, but when actually faced with it, animal/human instinct kicks in and we thoughtlessly want to fight to preserve our life...

The Rape of Nanking is the first thing that comes to mind when I read this.
