We are only trying to make things better.

1.A year ago.

The terrorist attacks were now getting more and more ferocious, far too regular and incredibly better planned. It seemed that almost daily somewhere in the world a plane, boat or building would be blown to smithereens. The whole damn planet was in turmoil; normal methods of control were no longer working. This needed a new angle, fresh ideas, and a plan to finally stop these fanatics.

I am, or rather I should say was, Captain George Page of Her Majesties British Army, Head of Security at the highly classified research centre by Creedy Loch in the Scottish Highlands.

At the base was a small contingent of my troops; my Sergeant Phil Dunne and twenty enlisted men. We were stationed here to protect Doctor Jeffrey Ernest and his team. We weren't privy to what the research was but as you would expect curiosity soon got both my boys and I asking around; trying to get some more information. This led me to an unexpected but truly amazing meeting.

During my unofficial investigations I had taken quite a shine to one of Dr Ernests assistants. Pam Yeats was a remarkable woman; she was beautiful, intelligent and with a smile which could melt even this old soldiers heart. We quickly developed a loving relationship and even talked about marriage once this posting was over. For the first time in my life I was totally in love. It was she who first explained the reason why we were here.

Dr Ernest was a neurological engineer; I must admit I hadn't even heard of that before. He was attempting to develop a microchip that would be implanted into the brain of every person on the entire planet including every new born child! I don't try to understand how but this would inhibit all violent tendencies, enable the governments to actually read thoughts; it was total control of the masses.

2.Ten months ago.

The more I think about this the more I worry; there is no way that everyone would agree to this implant even if it could be made. Civil Liberties groups, terrorist supporting governments, the list would be endless. Surely the powers that be must know this? Of course they do. What plan do they have to solve this?

I make my way to the main gates. Another delivery of test equipment is due; no doubt some more rats to have their brains opened and the prototype chip inserted. My guys can handle the deliveries okay but I like to watch now and again as it keeps them on their toes. The truck arrives just like normal but the cargo today is far from the usual. From the back six men of Middle Eastern origin disembark all shackled together. It's apparent that the experiments have reached the next stage. The men are taken to the main ward and prepared for surgery immediately. I don't see them again for a long time.

3. Seven months ago.

Doctor Ernest calls me to his office.

"Captain please sit down," he is his usual condescending self "we are now ready to let the test subjects have full run of the complex."

I admit I am a bit shocked even if I knew it was coming.

"Excuse me Doctor but I need a bit more background and details about these men."

"The six men were convicted terrorists. They are now reprogrammed, they will you offer no threat. I need to see how they react to a new environment."

I am not happy but as a soldier I knew how to follow orders, and follow them I did.

The men had no names, just numbers- one to six. I watched them closely and involved them in conversation. It was very strange, they did not just have the violent emotions removed; it was all the emotions. They were no trouble at all, whatever they were asked to do they done. Its not as if they were mindless it was just that they were easily controlled, the chip certainly worked.

4. Two months ago.

It all kicked off with a live televised news conference jointly held by all the big nations- U.K, U.S.A, China, Russia, Germany and France to name just some. They called a world wide state of emergency, an end to all elections and martial law enforced. The outrage to this was bad enough but when the forced implantation of the Citizen Chip, as it was now called, was released it was the start of world wide riots.

It was now apparent that my facility was not the only one producing the chips, it was just Britain's. Also without us knowing about it all enlisted men out with this base in our armed forces; army, navy and air force, had already been implanted and were now the perfect controlled fighting force. The media is quickly taken over by the governments so we have no idea how bad the situation is outside our facility. By going through the army radio channels I find the movement and deployment of the troops was huge. No doubt people were being killed in their thousands when they refused to be chipped. What the hell have we started.

5. The present day.

Pam tells me she has just had a briefing from Dr Ernest. All army personnel down from the rank of general are to be chipped from next week as most of the uprising has been put down. I will soon be a mindless drone just like 99% of the population. It will soon just be the politicians and top army brass that will have their own minds. This has gone too far; I will take my Pam away from this madness. God knows where we shall go or what we shall do.
