President Scott Hughes entered the N.A.T.O. conference center. It was located directly underneath a mountain which had been filled with concrete and was surrounded by soldiers, vehicles and N.A.T.O. Forces. “Good day President there waiting for you inside” said an armed guard who was stationed just outside the conference room door. Scott looked at the rank insignia on his soldier. A Sergeant. Ever since the attempted bombing of the conference room guards had been posted at every nook and cranny of the center. Scott just smiled at the guard and kept on walking as the door closed behind him. The President walked through the rows of tables and chairs until he reached the front row. His row. He walked over to his seat and sat down. Scott took a breath and looked up at the center stand and saw a man preparing to give a speech. He almost instantly recognised him as being the Prime Minister of Canada. Scott would never forget how the middle aged man had sent hundreds of troops to Nunavut to stop a Civil War. He had almost become accustomed to looking at the brown hair, blue eyes, chiselled features and tailored suit’s the man wore on the television. “As many of you know-” began the man “I am Prime Minister Barry Wells of Canada. I have come to address a very important matter to you. As many of you have seen the amount of terrorism in North America and Europe has been rapidly increasing. It has gone so far as to attempt to cause a civil war in Canada, and assassinate the American President. We must take action to stop these events of terrorism from escalating. However not only terrorism has threatened us. In the East China, Japan, Korea and many other countries have been uniting and sharing each others technologies and weapons to form the Asian Dominion. In Africa most of the countries including Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa have mobilised one of the largest fighting forces in history and proclaimed themselves the African Coalition. Even amongst all of this division some countries like Russia have formed a group called the Order of Neutral Governments. We must take action and do everything we can to stop more division and war. It is our duty as N.A.T.O. forces to halt any threat of war and to create peace amongst the world.” Many of the people in the conference room began to applaud. Scott did so as well. “About time someone besides me addressed these concerns” Scott muttered under his breath. “I believe the American President has also made a speech on the terrorism plaguing our countries” said Barry. Once again the Leaders of the N.A.T.O. countries applauded as Scott walked out of his row and towards the center stand. “My fellow Leaders of the world-” he began as he felt all eyes on him “there is something that is damaging our integrity, our honour and our freedom. Terrorism. Terrorism has plagued the world since 1867. I believe that in 2031 we have the power, the knowledge and the technology to stop it once and for all. Now I am unsure on your views of the matter however this is something I feel we must take action against. All of our nations have come close to or have experienced a travesty in the last year. Now is the time to strike. Now is the time to end this” Scott said with a grave look on his face. Every leader in the room began to applaud him. “I would like to propose that we immediately begin a counter terrorist attack” Scott added. All of the N.A.T.O. leaders cheered in agreement when suddenly an armed military group clad in gray and black armour burst into the room. Scott looked at their faces and saw only their black masks and headgear. This meant only one thing. These were Phantoms, a Special Operations N.A.T.O. Force. “Sir!” yelled the leader of the group as he gave a salute “what is it son?” asked Scott. “Sir we have received orders to get you out of this complex ASAP” said the soldier. Scott looked at the mans shoulder and saw the insignia of a Captain. “Who issued the orders soldier?” asked Scott “Sir that would be the Vice President” replied the Captain. “Under what grounds?” “Under the grounds that he has received information on a plan to assassinate you” finished the Captain. Suddenly Scott heard yells and gunshots from outside the conference room doors. “Sir I suggest you find cover” said the Captain as the group raised their M23 Submachine guns at the door and as the President moved behind the stand. Scott watched from his stand as all the N.A.T.O. leaders scrambled to find cover in case this was an assassination attempt. “Omega formation Delta” ordered the Captain. The Phantoms quickly moved and got into position around the door to the hallway. “Switch to thermal” ordered the Captain. “Gotcha” Scott heard a soldier say. “Fourteen tangos armed with AK-93s” whispered the Captain. The Phantoms quickly moved to the sides of the door and drew Combat Knives. “Stay Quite” ordered the Captain. Scott just nodded and ducked even lower behind the center stand. How long will I live if the Phantoms fail? Will they take me as a prisoner? Will they kill me on the spot? Or will they just take me as a hostage and use me to get ransom money? A million questions ran through Scott’s head. As he tried to imagine himself surviving the attack the door burst open and the Terrorists entered the room. “Temps à tuer” said the lead Terrorist as they entered the door. Scott’s heart sunk. They weren’t here for a ransom or for a hostage. They came to kill him. Scott began to pray. Something he had never done before. He prayed to whatever god that may be listening. He prayed to see his family, to see his newborn son and his wife again. He prayed that he would live. Scott’s eyes were beginning to fill with tears. He quickly wiped them away and peeked out from his cover. “là-bas” the lead Terrorist yelled as Scott saw the Terrorist Leader point his AK-93 at him. Scott slithered back into his hiding place as an arm grasped his neck. The arm quickly dragged him up from behind the stand. “No, NO, NO PLEASE NO!” Scott heard from the leader of the United Kingdom as a Terrorist hit him in the head and then shoved a gun into his mouth. Several other of the Leaders of N.A.T.O. were suddenly shot. Scott stared into the eyes of the terrified blood soaked British Prime Minister for only a brief moment until the Terrorist pulled the trigger and emptied a trio of rounds into the man. Scott had no choice but to watch as the remains of the Prime Minister’s brain flew out of his head and into the wall behind him. Scott turned to look back at where the Phantoms had been and noticed only shadows. He squinted and still he could only barely make out their outline. As he stared at the Shadows he noticed that they suddenly moved and through a reflective projectile towards the Terrorist holding onto him. Scott turned to look at the Terrorist whose grasp on him was loosening. As he turned he saw the knife enter and exit the Terrorist’s skull. All of a sudden the five Terrorists in the room fell to the floor with either knifes sticking out of their heads or with their head split in two. The shadows suddenly took form and emerged as the Phantoms. Fully visible and armed. “Phantom-2, 3 and 4 take point” ordered the Captain in a stone cold voice. Scott began to cry as he looked at the blood and the bodies littering the floor of the conference room. “Why didn’t you save them?” he asked “Sir our orders were to get you out of here alive they never mentioned anything about protecting any other N.A.T.O. personnel” replied the Captain. “Do you have a name soldier?” asked Scott. “Yessir” replied the man. “What is it?” questioned Scott “Captain Michael Winters” said the soldier. “Captain I am changing your orders. Protect every N.A.T.O. personnel we find on this mission” said Scott angrily. The soldier seemed to stare back at him for a moment. “Yessir” replied Phantom-1 quietly. “Sir we have Tango movement forty meters in front” said a Phantom. “Roger that Phantom-3, move to engage” said the Captain. Scott watched as the Phantom turned and raised his weapon as he moved towards the door. “Sir just in case” said Phantom-1 who was holding out an M9F pistol in his hand, which was loaded with C-Type Armour piercing rounds. “No soldier I will not hold a weapon” said Scott. “Yes Sir” replied the Captain slowly. As Phantom-1 turned back to his team Scott looked around the room. As he looked he saw the bullet filled body of Canadian Prime Minister Barry Wells lying face down in a pool of blood seeping from the hole in the back of his head. Scott had to turn away from the gruesome sight of his friend’s bloodied corpse. “Captain I changed my mind. Give me that pistol” Scott said slowly. The Captain slowly turned back to the President and said “Yes Sir” enthusiastically. Captain Winters turned back to the Hallway and saw the Terrorist round the corner at the end of the hallway. A burst of fire from Phantom-3 ripped through the soldier’s chest leaving a trio of 5cm circumference holes. “Tango down” said Phantom-3. “Good job Phantom. Take Phantom-4 with you and move ahead” ordered the Captain. “Yes Sir” replied the Phantom. “President we have to move now in case the Terrorists send reinforcements or worse” said the Captain. What could be worse? Thought Scott. As if the soldier could read Scott’s mind he added several examples of worse things they could send. “They could send Tanks, Gray Falcons and even Bombers” added Michael. “This is Phantom-3 to Phantom-1 we have several enemy Tangos in the lobby leading to the ground floor, requesting assistance” said the voice on the com channel. “Roger -Phantom-3 reinforcements inbound” said the Captain. “President I suggest you get behind me” said the Captain. Scott just nodded and walked behind the two soldiers as they moved through the hallway. Scott watched as the Captain keyed his Intercom and called for evac. “This is Phantom-1 to Black Hawk-343 we are in need of evac and air support. We have the package, repeat we have the package.” “Captain we have to get the hell out of here now the Asian Dominion has sent support for the Terrorists repeat Asian Dominion in the area! Oh ****! we’ve been hit! Prepare for crash landing. Captain you need to find another …..” an explosion cut off the pilot and ended the transmission. “Damn it” said Phantom-2 “Gray Falcon-343 is KIA” said the Captain. “Phantom-1!! Where are you? We are pinned down by enemy fire and we have Asian Dominion in the area repeat the A.D. is in the area!” yelled the com channel “Phantom-3 what is your situation over?” asked Michael “Sir! Thank god! Phantom-4 and I are pinned down by enemy fire and N.A.T.O. forces outside the lobby are suffering heavy casualties repeat heavy casualties!” yelled Phantom-3 as bursts of gunshots littered the transmission. “Ah ****” screamed Phantom-3 before he was cut off by a loud explosion “Sir we need you down here now!” yelled the man on the com “Phantom-3 we are inbound stay down” ordered Captain Winters. “Sir we have enemy birds repeat enemy birds in our area.” yelled the soldier as bursts of gunshots littered his transmission “Move it Phantom-2!” yelled the Captain. Phantom-2 quickly nodded and ran ahead of Phantom-1 and President Hughes. “Sir I am suggesting you stay here” said the Captain. “We have been notified of multiple hostiles in the area if they get you its game over for the N.A.T.O. organisation” said the Captain. “Okay then Captain I’ll stay here and wait for evac” said Scott. “Thank you Sir” replied Phantom-1 before he sprinted off towards Phantom-3’s position. Captain Winters ran forward towards Phantom-3. Could he be dead? The Captain just pushed the question to the back of his head as he rounded a corner and stumbled upon Phantom-3, 2 and 4 who were taking cover behind the corner “Captain” said Phantom-3 as Phantom-1 turned to look at him “I counted 17 hostiles in the lobby and over 3 birds outside the doors” he continued as bullets flew into the wall in front of them. “Damn it” whispered the Captain “Alright I’m calling for support” declared Captain Winters. Phantom-1 signalled the com and spoke into it “This is Captain Michael Winters we have enemies all around the Installation and we have the package! Calling for immediate assistance does anybody copy, over?” Everyone waited for a full five seconds before hearing a reply “This is General Middleton of the N.A.T.O.48th Division what can we do to help?” asked the man on the com “Sir we need Black Hawks and Rex Fighters for a combat extraction” “Okay then Captain we’ll do what we can” said the man as the com closed and more bullets flew into the wall in front of the Phantoms. “So what, do we have to wait for him?” asked Phantom-3 who had to yell because of all the weapons firing. “Negative Sergeant we just soften em up for our fly boys to finish off. So it is your job to kick as much Asian Dominion ass as possible before the show is over” replied the Captain. The Phantoms began to laugh. “Roger that” replied the Phantom. “Phantom-3 and 4 open up, and then me and Phantom-2 will take the rest of them out while you cover us” ordered Captain Winters. His entire team nodded at him and for a moment he thought. What if this was bigger than a Terrorist attack? What if this was war? “One last thing squad. Use the rules of war. Take no prisoners and do not become one” said Phantom-1. Phantoms-3 and 4 almost immediately ran out of cover and fired on the Terrorists and A.D. soldiers. Captain Winters could hear their yells as he stepped out of cover, pulled his trigger and watched the hostiles receive his rounds in the head. “GO, GO, GO!” he yelled to his team as a single A.D. soldier drew a machete and charged towards him. Captain Winter turned to face his opponent with his submachine gun. He pulled the trigger and the bullets tore through the mans chest. The soldier dropped his machete and fell to the ground dead. Even in all the shooting Captain Winter still heard the faint noise of an A.D. Tiger. “Cover! Now!” yelled the Captain as he threw himself to the floor whilst still shooting at all of the remaining hostiles. Shortly after he gave the order the last hostile hit the floor and his team ducked to the ground. But just as they did so Captain Winters looked at the sky and saw a missile exit the helo. and soar towards him and his team. As he turned his head away from the copter he saw the President round the corner upright with the gun still in his hand. It was at this moment when he realised it was too late for him to react …… too late for him to save the last leader of N.A.T.O. At least too late for him to save the President without him dying. But of course he didn’t have to because Phantom-4 had already seen him and was now running to push him away from the corner. “Phantom-4 get down!!” yelled the Captain. At this time the missile was already entering the room and Phantom-4 had just pushed the President out of the line of fire and slammed on the controls to shut the Blast door. Captain Winters watched in horror as his team-mate was blown to bits from the blazing inferno that had once been a missile. The Captain pushed himself off of the ground and began to fire his submachine gun at the chopper while he ran out of the building, hoping to hit one of the Missiles and destroy the bastard. But instead of hitting a missile he hit the Pilot and the copter began to dive towards him as it shot missiles in random directions. “Evasive manuevers” he yelled to his team giving them enough time to dive away from the building and cover their heads while he watched the copter fly towards him. But strangely enough after seeing his teammate whom he had spent the last decade with die he didn’t care about getting out of this mess as much. He figured he must be in shock and that his bloodstream must be filled with adrenaline, considering the fact that everyone was at least 2 seconds slower than what he thought it would normally be. But Luck was on his side and 2 of the many missiles fired found a target, an A.D. Tiger copter, just as the falling copter flew only a couple feet over his head. At least I’ll still get hit by it’s rear rotor blade he thought to himself. But as the back of the copter got closer and closer he noticed it was missing. Perhaps he destroyed it and had spared himself from being chopped to bits he thought. The Captain almost chuckled at the thought of it, and how much luck was on his side. A couple seconds after realising that the copter collided into the building that the President was inside Captain Winter turned around. Only now as he walked toward the wreckage and the damaged building did the Captain finally realise that he hadn’t noticed the sound which had fallen upon the area around the mountain. Silence. The gunshots had stopped, the screams of dying soldiers had stopped and the fire of the crashed helicopter had stopped. For some reason he had only just totally lost his hearing. Must be a bad mix of shock and a hell of a lot of adrenaline! He chuckled at the thought but kept walking towards the wreckage. He climbed up the steps and turned the corner to the door only to find it’s controls destroyed and the area behind the door scorched from the missile and the crashed helo. The Captain turned with a strange gracefulness and picked up a piece of the wreckage, turned back again and pried the door open. “President Hughes are you here?” called out the Captain (although not expecting a reply, at least not one he could hear). But as he rounded the corner he didn’t have to hear it because he saw it. A man clad in black clothing and a ski mask was holding a gun at the Presidents head. “S’Arreter! S’Arreter ou faire feu ton President!” screamed the Terrorist. However the President could tell that the Captain either couldn’t hear him or couldn’t understand him because he just drew a knife from the back of his right leg and threw it into the terrorist’s face. The man stuttered for a second as if hesitating to fall and then toppled over a loose tile on the floor. “President we need to get you outside” said the Captain as he walked over to the corpse and drew the knife from it’s face. The President just nodded, mumbled a word to himself and then exited the room with the Captain closely behind him. When the Captain closed the door behind him he saw all of his teams faces staring at him. He could tell that they had felt worse than he had. He could see it in their eyes. They all felt remorse, sorrow and regret. Seeing the sight of his teammates like this caused a deep wound to form in his heart, one that could only go after the complete destruction of the A.D. But then he realised they weren’t staring at him. They were staring behind him. He turned to see what it was and then realising his fear saw what it was. The charred corpse of his dead teammate. His squad had been like a family. And now that family was missing one member. Abruptly Captain Winter put his hand over his face and cursed the A.D. He couldn’t bear to see his dead teammate like this, a charred skeleton with the odd bit of burnt flesh hanging here and there. He turned away from the sight and walked down the steps toward them. But as he walked he could see the sadness welling up in the eye’s of his remaining team members. The only thing he could do was ignore them and carry on. The massive amount of anger he felt was quickly being replaced by honour and the sense that he had only felt just now. That him and his team were doing something. They were making the world a safer place. But he still wanted to watch his bullet’s ripping through Chin Yong-Po’s chest, however something told him he would never get that chance. Just as his train of thought ended Dozens of Black Hawks and Rex Fighters began to appear over the horizon. “Sir, Orders?” ask Phantom-2. “Stay in the building until the-” the Captain suddenly stopped realising he could hear again. “Captain?” asked Phantom-2. “Stay here until the surrounding area is clear we don’t want to take any chances” he said firmly. Just as suddenly as it had left him the sounds of the battle returned to him and he once again heard the gunshots, the crackle of fire from the helicopter crash and the screaming of dying men. “So what are we gonna do for the next five minutes while those choppers come ‘rescue us’?” asked Phantom-3 “We do what Phantoms do best, we slip into the shadows and wait” replied the Captain as his team picked up their gear and moved to the ruin of the building. For several minutes they waited in the darkness, waiting for the sound of the landing helicopters, but they never came. Until static erupted on the radio “This is General Middleton where are you Captain?” asked the voice “Were in the dark” he replied “Well how descriptive is that!” commented the General. “It’s as much as I want to give away until you land out side of the ruins of the conference room and get us out of here” he said firmly. The general let out a sigh “Roger that”. “So I guess we are going to-” Phantom-3 was interrupted by the sounds of slowing rotor blades. “What was that?” asked the Captain as they stepped into the light and Phantom-3 gave a slight grunt. The Captain just smiled and walked towards the aircraft noticing all of the soldiers getting out and securing a perimeter. “General its good to meet you in person” said the Phantom “Its good to see you too” replied the General. But their triumph was short lived, a distinct shot from a sniper rifle pierced the chest of the General and spelled the beginning of another attack. “President get on the aircraft, now!” ordered the Phantom as he activated the com channel used by the N.A.T.O. forces to direct their forces in the area. “Pilots get those choppers out of here” he ordered as he signalled the Phantoms to get on with the President. “Sergeants keep your squads in formation we need you to give the A.D. enough trouble so that they forget about the President” said Captain Winters “Don’t worry Captain you get the President out of this mess, and let us deal with the A.D. scum!” commented a Sergeant. “Alright then” the Captain said as the President’s chopper lifted off and a different pilot signalled to him to get on so they could leave. Just as the Captain recognised the signal and took a step forward a rocket slammed into the side of the copter and sent him flying backwards 25ft with the helicopter barrel rolling to the side. “This area’s too hot we got to move” he yelled as he rushed onto the Presidents Helicopter and as it lifted them away from the death and destruction into the sky.
