The Boy that Lived Next Door

When the third period bell rang Lauren slumped into her chair and pulled out her chemistry books. It was her first lesson of chem. and she had no idea what they were doing. There was an unexpected shadow fall over her and she looked up into deep brown eyes. They contained every emotion ever thought of and yet they held more of sadness and discomfort over everything else. His face was stiff and there was no smile present on the lush lips she had once thought of kissing. “Hey” was the reply in which sent a shiver of coldness down her back. She smiled weakly and nodded back to him in greeting. “Not talking? Well that don’t bother me…but I’m afraid that we’ve been pair for chemistry” Lauren’s jaw dropped and her eyes widened “YOU do chemistry?”

Caleb laughed at her peculiar remark and nodded “Yes…I do chemistry. Now can I sit down or are you going to question whether I should be aloud to sit as well” Laurens mouth still hung low as she pulled her big books off the chair next to her. She felt the rough skin of his hand under her chin as he closed her open mouth for her “Sorry” she giggled embarrassed at her reaction to his comment. All through the lesson she sat and listen to his very detailed description of what they had done the day that she had been away, understanding most of it but not totally listening to what he had to say, she was to busy looking into his intense brown eyes. “…So do you understand…Lauren?”

“Huh…what…umm no not really” WHAT THE HELL! Of course she understood what he was talking about; chemistry was like the easiest subject ever…WHAT DID SHE SAY NO FOR! She knew why she did, she just didn’t want to accept that fact that…she was falling for the bad boy next door. “Would you like some help?”

Once again Lauren was faced with the difficult decision of choosing the right thing to say “Umm...Well…Yeah if you don’t mind” THERE SHE WENT AGAIN! What WAS she doing? “Ok then well if you’re not doing anything this afternoon I’ll come by and go over it with you”

“Yeah sure” She smiled and put on the sweetest face possible.

That afternoon Lauren skipped home and cleaned her room, when her other popped her head in the door she took her daughters temperature “Are you sure your not sick…Your cleaning honey?”

“Mum…I’m fine. I’ve just got company coming soon” Her mother looked at her with a skeptical look on her face “Company? Company you’re cleaning your room for? Well I know it’s not Christy and its not Jake…so who is it?”

Lauren smiled and answered her mothers question with a hint of mischief in her voice “The boy next door”

“Oh, Yes Caleb” The mischief suddenly left no trace in Laurens voice

“You know him?”

“Well yes of course I do. His mother is a dear but his dad is a bit of a hard head. But all together they are lovely people” For the third time that day Lauren’s jaw dropped, if it fell any further they would have to surgically re-attach it. The doorbell rang, and Lauren almost fell down the stairs running to answer it. And there he stood, on HER doorstep. His hair gleaming in the afternoon sun and his beautiful brown eyes starred back at her.

“Hey” He said to her but all that came from her was a little moan. He looked at the disgusted expression on her face and laughed “It’s alright; I don’t mind if you just moan and not talk…I might understand you a bit better if you speak though” Lauren blushed and looked at her feet, and again for the second time today she felt his rough hands under her chin “Come on lets get some work done” She nodded slightly and motioned for him to follower her. “MOTHER! Caleb’s here, we’re going up to my room to study”

“Alright dear” was the reply that came from the direction of the laundry. She walked down the hallway and up the stairs to her door, the first on the right. “Here we are, it’s a little messy but I haven’t had time to clean” She pushed open the door revealing all of her privacy to him to inspect. Light blue walls were accompanied by dark blue curtains and a white dooner with light blue markings covered the double bed in the middle of the room “So… I take it you like blue” He laughed

“Yes I do actually” She bit back defensively

“Hey…whoa there I was just asking no need to bite my head off” She blushed again

“Sorry, so there’s the desk, and the bed and the chair” She pointed out all of the possible study areas

“I think we’re better off sitting on the floor, there will be more room to spread out our stuff” She nodded and threw a couple of her pillows onto the lush carpeted floor and fell down onto one of them. Caleb dropped his bag and sat beside her, he was so close she could smell his cologne. She closed her eyes and focused herself, but when she opened them she was faced again with the eyes she had come to adore “Are you alright” He asked her calmly. She nodded “I’ve just got a bit of a head ache that’s all”

“Are you sure you want to so this now, you should be resting?”

“Umm no I’m fine…I’ll be fine…thanks” He smiled and pulled out a book “Ok so we will just start with the simple stuff and get you ready for the next chapter”

“Oh yeah hang on I’ll just grab my books” She stood and her head spun but she ignored it, she pulled the heavy books from the desk and was walking back to her seat when her head spun again which caused her to trip sending her falling…into soft, strong arms.
”Lauren…are you sure your okay…You don’t look it, your very pale” He pulled her down onto the ground and let her rest for a second in his arms. She closed her eyes but his sudden movement made her relaxed eyes jerk open and she found her self groping for something to hold onto as he lifted her onto the bed “It’s alright I’m not going to drop you” He set her down and put a pillow under her had, leaning over her he inspected her pale but still stunningly beautiful face “You alright?”

She nodded and a “Yes” managed to escape her lips “Well that’s good. You gave me a bit of a scare there” He pushed the loose strands of her hair off her face, his hand was warm to the touch and he was shaking slightly, but whether it was because he just carried her across the large room to her bed or because he was nervous, she didn’t know. Before she knew what she was doing she sat up and gazed at him before their lips met. Her sudden reaction made him tremble but he didn’t pull away, in fact he kissed her back. Her body went limp in his arms as he guided her head back to the pillow, his legs swung up into her white covers and she felt his body up against hers. He was kissing her, down her neck, along her collar bone, back up her neck, across her jaw and back to her lips and she was taking in every part of his slender body with her hands. She suddenly felt his whole body stiffen, his hands found the bottom of her shirt but once again he paused and took in her slim form under the tight jeans she had traded for her school skirt, and the little purple button up shirt. His head dropped and he kissed her again but there was no passion in it as there was before. He pulled back down her shirt and pulled his body away from her smooth and delicate hands “I can’t…I’m sorry. You have your perfect boyfriend and your perfect life…I’m…well I’m me!” She sat up beside him and took his head in her hands “I think you being you is what made me do that just then” She kissed his cheek and looked into his eyes “People say your eyes say so much about you, but all I see in yours are anger and hurt. For a second there I saw peace…and love” She kissed him again “I think that when I was younger I dated Jake because he was my best friend and it seemed right, now I can see I did it for all the wrong reasons” She smiled at him, and all he could do was give a weak but hopeful smile back. She pushed back his hair away from his eyes and kissed him “I’m sorry if I made things difficult for you”

He sighed “Yeah me too” Lauren stared at him wondering what his next move would be

“I think we should keep this between us…I’ve got to go” He stood up and she followed him, when he turned back to her the compassion she had seen in his eyes before had faded back to cold hard stone “I don’t think it was me this situation has made it hard for. I’ll see you tomorrow at school” Lauren was left standing at the tops of the stairs trying to figure out what his last comment meant.

Fridays…Fridays where no better than a Monday. Lauren wandered aimlessly around, with no where to go or nowhere to be, she just walked. The day before had been terrible, she had tried to talk to Jake but he seemed to have some resilience towards her and Caleb ignored her altogether. She seemed to drift from place to place without any need to be in one particular spot but funnily enough she seemed to stick close to the gym which just happened to be the place that Caleb spent most of his time. When the bell rung to go home she seemed to almost sprint down the road, unfortunately she ran out of breathe before she got home. She slowed to a walk and looked around herself; every thing was starting to lose its colour. Winter was getting close and according to the weather report they were expecting it to be close to the coldest winter yet. “Hey, can you walk any faster. Anybody will think you’re running away” Lauren stiffened but relaxed again when she realized it was a female voice. She turned to see Christy running after her “Oh, hey sorry I needed to get away from that place” Christy caught up with her and she seemed to be beaming in delight “So, what’s happened?” questioned Lauren

“He asked me if our date was still a go for tonight!” Lauren nearly fell over in laughter

“Really?”

“Yeah…and he was so shy about it”

“Awww that’s so cute, so are you still going out with him tonight though?” Christy nodded “That’s good; I don’t think I’m going to be in the mood for socializing tonight so I might just get a movie and stay in”

Christy looked at her friend of 6 years in surprise “I’ve known you long enough to know that something’s up, you never turn down the opportunity to go out and your parents are away for the night…What’s wrong” Lauren’s head dropped and she sighed

“I’m breaking up with Jake when I get home…I’ve been thinking about it all day. Christy there’s something I need to tell you” Lauren then proceeded to tell her best friend of her romantic happenings of the day before while Christy listened in astonishment

“So…you have it in for the boy next door…the one that read your diary?” Lauren nodded at her. Christy took her obviously discomforted friend by the shoulders “I’ve never liked Jake anyway. If it makes you happy your doing the right thing” Lauren tried to smile but she failed miserably “I know, I just feel bad that I didn’t tell him what happened”

“Yeah I understand that…but he doesn’t have to know everything. Come on I’ll walk you home” Christy took Lauren’s hand and dragged her up the street towards the front door.

The phone line went dead. Lauren was sitting on the lounge room floor in tears. They had been such good friends; the only obvious thing to do next was date. When Lauren thought to herself now all she could manage to see was her saying yes for all the wrong reasons. The wet tears seemed to flow like a river down her delicate cheeks and no happy thought or cheerful memory could stop them. Jake had almost thrown himself through the phone and every curse word know to man stung her ears like a thousand angry bees, but she had stayed calmed and had given him her reasons for breaking up with him. Now all she could think of was how much he was going to hate her for this. Lauren pulled herself up off the carpeted floor and slumped into the arm chair; she pulled the blanket up around her chin and turned on the TV. Laurens eyes felt heavy and soon after getting comfortable in the blue sofa she fell asleep. Her body was violently shaken and when she woke from a hazy sleep the smell of alcohol hit her nose like rotting flesh, the lights where off making it impossible for her to see but the voices in the room were easily distinguishable. “Jake…what are you doing here? What time is…?” Before she finished her sentence her arms felt like they where being pulled from their sockets and she was yanked for the chair in which she had just woken up in. Her hands were forced behind her back and she screamed out in pain “What the **** is going on” She yelled out louder when a hand connected with the soft skin of her face “SHUT THE **** UP BEFORE I DO YOU RIGHT HERE!” Jakes voice was clear over the ranting and raving of the other guys that where currently occupying the house. He lifted her into his arms and walked away from the jeering guys, the movement of his body indicated he was walking up the stairs, and he took a right turn at the top. The door slammed shut behind him as he threw her into the bed that she and Caleb had occupied only the day before. Jake forced his drunken body on top of her while holding her hands above her making it impossible for Lauren to move. She kicked and lashed out but there was nothing she could do against the strength of her ex-boyfriend. “Jake”…she whimpered through running tears “Why are you doing this to me”

“Because…I know”

“You what?”

“I KNOW GODDAMIT. I KNOW WHAT YOU DID WITH HIM. I WAS STADNING AT YOUR FRONT DOOR WHEN HE WALKED IN…AND THAT TREE BESIDE YOUR WINDOW IS SO EASY TO CLIMB” The last few words rolled off his tongue and bit into her mind so deep it left a scar. The tears had stopped now and she could do nothing but stare up into Jakes shriveled face “I’m sorry” were the only words that escaped her mouth. Jake kissed her hard on the lips almost drawing blood. He followed her jaw line and found the top of her shirt “You took you love, now I’m gonna take what I deserve to have” He ripped open the front of the shirt she was wearing revealing her limp tanned body for his eyes to take in “Hmmm…nice” He kissed her again, harder this time while fumbling around with the button on her pants “So tense my dear, you need to relax”

A violent scream sounded from the lounge room downstairs, Lauren took the chance to kick him off of her and he went flying onto the floor. There where more screams of pain ring in her ears when her door burst open and Caleb came in with a baseball bat in hand. He grabbed Jakes collar and dragged his drunken body down the stairs and threw him out the front door “Now **** OFF!” He slammed the door in his face and ran back up to find Lauren half naked on her bedroom floor. He pulled the blanket off her bed and wrapped it around her shaking body and hugged her “Calm down. Everything’s alright, there gone now” He sat there for three hours, never moving a muscle. He just held her until the shaking had subsided.

Caleb was the first to break the silence “Would you like to take a shower?” Lauren nodded slightly and he helped her up off the floor. He took her hand and led her unsteady frame towards the bathroom “Is there anything else you want?” No word escaped Laurens mouth but once again she shook her head slightly “Alright, well I’ll try and tidy up a little, they left one hell of a mess. When I’m done I’ll make you some tea…any way you like it?”

“Umm…yeah…ahh black…and two please” Caleb smiled at her and she smiled back weakly

“Hey Caleb…”

“Hmm…?”

“Thank you…so very much” She walked gingerly toward him and kissed him softly on the lips. The metallic taste of blood hit Caleb’s tongue, “Your bleeding, Here let me see” His hand smoothed the hair away from her face revealing a small cut on her lip where Jake had kissed her so hard it had actually drawn blood.

“****…I’m gonna kill that bastard when I get hold of him. He’s going to regret ever laying his filthy hands on you” Caleb looked at her blue eyes and sighed “I think I might stick around tonight, just incase he comes back…if that’s alright with you” Even though Lauren had just been through one of the most terrible ordeals of her life, she beamed when he suggested it “I don’t mind at all, umm but if you don’t mind I’d like to take a shower now” Caleb flushed red

“Umm yeah I’ll leave you to do that on your own” He smiled at her enticingly and the words jumped from her mouth before she had the chance to stop them “Well you don’t have to…if u don’t want to” Caleb nearly choked

“Ex…excuse me?”

She smiled and walked back away from him and tempted him to follow her, and just as she expected…he didn’t move. A devil grin crossed her flushed, warn out face but she was still able to speak her mind “You don’t have to leave me to do it on my own…” She backed away again and this time he followed her. It was like there was an invisible thread connected to him that wrapped around her finger and all she had to do now was reel him in. He warily inched closer to her; he could see she was trembling in fear just as much as he was. What the hell was wrong with him? He had done this before, but every muscle in his body tensed up when he finally stood in front of her. He was the first to reach out, and he saw her skin ripple when his hand touched the bare skin of her arm. Was he scared? No…Maybe it was that fact that Lauren had nearly been raped by her ex-boyfriend only 2 hours ago and now she was standing in her own bathroom using her beautiful body to entice him in. His hand pushed back the hair from her face and she looked up into his brown eyes and informed him “I’m sorry if this is too much for you, you can gladly walk away” Caleb sighed “Its not that I don’t like you, it’s the fact that you were nearly raped 2 hours ago that is stopping me from holding you right now” He sighed and his hands dropped to his side. As an instant reaction Lauren leaned up and kissed him, her arms wrapped themselves around him in a tight embrace and she was determined not to let go. The arms that had previously fallen only minutes before were now trying to pry Laurens arms away from his body “Lauren, ENOUGH! Please don’t make this harder for me to walk away” He pleaded with her. Tears were stinging in her eyes but she forced them back “I’m sorry…I guess my feelings got a hold of me there” She backed away and let him walk to the door “Maybe it’s a good idea if you don’t stay here tonight” She called to him trying not to put any edge in her voice “I don’t want to make a fool of myself anymore” She started to shut the door behind him but he held it open with his foot. His head suddenly came down upon her and he kissed her swiftly “I’ll see you tomorrow then. If you need help you know where I am” She nodded and bid him goodnight.

Lauren heard him cleaning up while she was in the shower, then the front door slammed and she was all along again for the second time that night. The sudden feeling of abandonment overwhelmed her but she pushed it aside and down the drain with the boiling hot water that was flowing over her lush white skin.

Lauren slept late the next day, after the commotion of the night before she was completely exhausted. In was nearly midday before she rose and pulled open her blinds letting the sunlight flow in. The sky outside was a clear blue and the winds was blowing softly making the tree outside her bed sway slightly, making her seem off balance. Caleb’s house seemed almost eerie and dark so she guessed that no one was home, she sighed and walked back to the comfort of her own bed. The phone beside her rung and her heart leapt, she picked up the receiver only to be disappointed “Hey Hey how was your night in all alone?” Lauren smiled at her friend’s quirky personality, obviously she had fun last night “Not too bad, how was your date?”

Lauren sat for the next half hour and listened to every detail of the happenings between Jacob and Christy last night “Yeah but we left early because Jacob said he wasn’t feeling well so we headed back to his place and…uhh watched a movie” The slight pause in Christy sentence told her more than she had wanted to know “Ooooo now now, you no better than to watch a movie at a guys house…alone. It always leads to more” even though they couldn’t see each other Lauren knew Christy was blushing “So…anyway, we’re going out again tonight. There’s this party at one of Jacobs friends place and we’ve been invited if you want to tag along?”

Lauren thought about it for a moment “I think Caleb is going to be there too” Christy chorused through the phone. Lauren sighed “Fine…I’ll tag alone but if I get bored I’m leaving”

“Great we’ll come around at 7pm and pick you up. Bye” Before Lauren could say goodbye her friend had hung up and once again she was listening to nothing but the dial tone. Lauren let the cordless receiver fall onto her bed then she followed it, hitting the pillows with a soft grunt. So, what to do when you’re at home all on your own. She pulled herself into a sitting position again “GOD” she moaned. There was a knock at the door and she was instantly on her feet and running down the stairs. She was about to open the door when she caught her reflection in the mirror in the hall way “****, Hold on. Just a minute” She bolted back up the stairs and tidied her hair. She still had her skimpy p.j’s on but she didn’t really care. When she finally opened the door she her heart fell when it was only the maid coming to do her routine cleaning of the house.

“Oh hi Mandy…” She sighed as she let the old woman enter her home

“Well don’t sound so excited to see me” Mandy shot back at her. Lauren’s head jerked up and she was quick to apologize “Oh, Sorry. I thought you were someone else. I’m so bored here, I think I’m going out of my mind” She giggled. The maid smiled at her with sympathy “It’s alright dear. How would you like to make yourself usefully and give an old woman a hand?” Lauren nodded and took the bucket from her hands “I’d be glad to be of assistance”

For the next three hours she followed Mandy around like a lost puppy, running here and there, doing as she was told, but after a while the boredom of before seemed to catch up with her. By now it was almost 4pm so Lauren thanked Mandy for doing her daily chores and slumped off toward her bedroom…
What to wear?” She hummed to herself. Her closet was starting to look bare again, but she was happy with the things she received. She pulled a little red pleated skirt of its hanger and laid it on her bed then continued to search for a little number that would suit it. She finally threw a black shirt onto her bed and surveyed her findings…Nice. Nothing flashy but it was enough to say ‘hey look at me, don’t I look hot’ She smiled and proceeded to take a shower. It 6.45pm when Lauren sat on her front step, her straight black hair cascaded around her face and the make up she had applied made her look so much older.
