The deep blue sky was as fascinating as ever. Stars scattered all over the blue mat before the night would fall and make them even brighter. Wind brought a faint smell of flowing water near by. There could not have been a better night. The boy was lying on his back on a bed of lush green grass slightly wet. Gazing the stars made him feel good. He had found his mother in one of the brightest stars which twinkled all night. It was a great pleasure for the boy to watch and to be watched back by it. As ever he was expressionless. After finishing his daily ritual of watching the silver dots in the sky for hours the boy walked back to his house. The house was five minutes walk from the river bank. He walked through mustard plants which were now yellow and reached his cosy little house. The darkness never scared him under the guidance of his mother who all ways twinkled for him. Days never changed. Bright mornings were not for him. He eagerly waited for the night, the blue sky, and the shiny little spot. He worked in the field with his father till dusk. They called the day off and headed back to the house. After a refreshing bath it was time for a hot supper. The boy relaxed for a few minutes. It was night again. There he was on his green bed watching the pitch dark sky and a million little silver pieces and the special one. It was time to go back and sleep. He walked back though the mustard field still seeing his mother. He was half way through, and things changed. The brightest star fell right in front of him. The star was glowing, bright, and very soothing. Boy startled. He went blank. He felt as if the darkness of the night engulfed him. He took a couple of deep breath and tried to relax. His mother had arrived. Surprised he was a little reluctant to touch the star. But he over came it and tried to lift the star. Effortlessly he picked up the star and started his journey back to his house. He did not want anyone else to see the star. He hurried, went to the backyard of his house. Dug open the earth sufficient to burry the star. He was still shivering. He finished the task, the task of burying his mother. He was tired. He walked back inside his house, and decided to sleep. With in a few minute he was fast asleep. It was a beautiful day. The golden sun shining softly fell on the boys face. Boy woke up remembering the star. He walked slowly to the back yard where he had buried his mother. He was amazed at the sight. There stood a plant. Plant which bore flowers, flowers which were blue, bright like the star, radiating light, flowers which were odourless. The boy had never seen such flowers before. Indeed they looked artificial. He mechanically plucked the flowers, burnt them, took the ash to the river and drowned it. Days past by, time changed, seasons were different. He grew older. He was a man now. He never forgot the ritual, ritual of burning the flowers, taking them and drowning in the river. The day was different. He forgot his daily routine. When he realised it was almost night. He went to his back yard and saw to his surprise that one of the flowers had turned into a fruit. It was all together a new experience to him. He fell short of ideas. He could not take any decision. Finally he took a bold step before going to sleep. He ate the fruit. He had found the elixir. He had woken up to be a little boy. He could remember everything which had gone past by him. He ran towards the back yard to see the elixir, elixir which had turned him into a boy. There stood a huge tree. The tree was dense green. It bore the most beautiful flowers, which were colourful, which were filled with fragrance. Tree was full of life. It was very natural. The boy smiled. Copyright 2008 hemi |
