With the
lantern in one hand and his pistol with one bullet in the other, Barney lowered
first his left leg, then the right one into that dark abyss. As he made his
way down he looked up once and thought he could see the Little Dipper in the
sky above the mouth of the crater. He thought of Thelma, and how she loved to
drive out to Lover's Leap and gaze at the light show of night stars. Andy was
right: Thelma was his girl, and he loved her dearly. After this, he would stay
clear of Juanita at the diner. Maybe he would take Thelma up to Lover's Leap
on the weekend, she'd like that.
Below, the dim orange light welcomed,
pulsing and then fading; and the quirky strangled off-notes called pleadingly,
as he descended.
Halfway down he yelled, "Andy, I'm
coming!" but only the cold haunting echo of his own voice answered back.
