Aunt Bee puts the last dry dish in the cupboard over the sink, then walks to the stove where she checks on dinner. The roast is coming along fine, she thinks. Andy will be pleased. She's pulling out a pot from under the sink when Opey walks in the back door from school. "Hi, Aunt Bee, I'm home." "I can see that. Why are you home so early? This is two days in a row now," she asks while wringing her hands on her long apron. Usually, Opey stops by the courthouse after school to visit his father, then they both come home together. "I just felt like it, that's all," he says. "Your father's probably worried about you. Does heknow you're home?" Aunt Bee asks. "I guess so." "What do you mean, you guess so. Opey Taylor, did you, or did you not tell your father you were coming straight home?" "I told him, but I don't think he heard me," Opey says. "Now what's that supposed to mean?" she asks, her arms crossed. "Well...I told him, but he didn't seem to be paying any attention, that's all. He was just sitting in his chair like always, only he was staring out the window looking up towards the sky like he was watching something. I looked too, but I didn't see anything. It was kind of scary." "Oh, I see," says Aunt Bee with a puzzled look etched across her tired face. "You'd better go get cleaned up for supper." Opey leaves the room, and Aunt Bee starts on the potatoes, skinning them for the pot. She begins to think about what the child has just said, then starts humming a tune to disperse the thought. It tries harder to solidify in her mind (you've seen it too, haven't you, and it's more than kind of scary), but in the kitchen Aunt Bee works faster and hums louder.Copyright 2008 Dave Bottoms |
