Lucille’s waiting just inside the front door, her arms crossed against her chest. The morning sun is gliding in and out between white billowy clouds, reflecting off the Sheriff’s car as it backs out of their drive and onto the gravel road. Her husband, Jed, marches up the front steps as the squad car speeds away in a cloud of dust. The screen door gives a sorrowful whine, then bangs shut behind him. “Well,” she asks, “what’d they say?” Jed stands there a moment without speaking, his hand rubbing the bristles under his chin. “Not much, really. Not much at all.” “Not much!” she repeats with surprise. “Honey, they were out there all night! What the hell happened, what did they say?” Jed looks down at his hands, playing with the calluses. “They said it was nothing. Not to worry about it. That’s what they said.” Outside the sun cowers behind denser, more substantial clouds turning the hallway’s natural light to a pale washed-out gray. “But something crashed out there, Jed. We didn’t just dream it.” “I know, Honey, I told them that, but Andy was acting real strange – I’ve never seen him act like that. And Barney, he wasn’t saying a word. When was the last time you knew Barney to not throw in his two-cents worth?” “So now what? What are we supposed to do?” “Nothing,” says Jed. “We’re not supposed to do a thing. The one thing Andy did say was to stay away from the back forty, that there’s nothing for us to see back there. He told me that the property behind the ridge was private and that a person would be trespassing if they was to go snooping around where they didn’t belong.” Lucille looks at her husband and Jed returns that look. Neither knows what to think other than the fact that the last two days have been a might bit stranger than they’re used to. “That sure doesn’t sound like Andy,” she says, her head shaking back and forth in disbelief. “No,” replies Jed. “It doesn’t.” Copyright 2008 Dave Bottoms |
