I look at Dawn; she is still staring out to the trees where Matt had run off to. I go to speak to her but she turns away and blurts out "Don't! You just keep away from me you bastard." She then storms away from me. It's now that I notice Wayne in the courtyard watching us. He beckons me down; I make my way to him quickly as the anger in me is about to erupt.
I point up to the wall and scream at him, "So he deserved to die like that? That's just ******* stupid. So what if he didn't join us, why couldn't they just have been left in peace?"
Wayne grabs me by the collar and pins me to a wall. He whispers in my ear "There must only be one leader. We have to rebuild this ****** up world under the Flag of God and the Reverend is the man who will lead us to salvation." I had always thought Wayne was just power crazy but it seems he now believes in this crap.
He releases his grip, fixes my clothes and does that stupid smile, "Come, the Reverend needs to see you, remember you are the only person who has seen inside their compound. We need that info if we are to persuade the rest of them to join us."
The Reverends office now has the appearance of a War Room. Maps, some of which I have reluctantly made, adorn the walls and Wayne and his cronies are arguing about the best way to get inside the supermarket. It seems to me that it will be an impossible task, there is no way we can force our way in without a huge loss of life, and numbers is a thing we haven't got.
BOOOOM. A huge explosion rocks the whole place, everything flies off the shelves in the office; we are under attack.
We all run out of the room like headless chickens, and are met by the sight of a huge cloud of smoke and dust where the main gates used to be.
"The bastards have blown up the gates!" Wayne makes the most obvious of comments. How could they have acted so quickly, it must have been planned in advance? It seems that Jim didn't trust the Reverend either and he had his revenge all ready.
I can now see movement from within the cloud, shapes getting closer and more visible. It's the zombies! There are six of them now inside the yard and more out of view no doubt. Wayne is organising people to get material together to form a blockade but they haven't spotted the monsters. I start screaming "Watch out! Get back, there are zombies inside!" They turn, see them and start to run. Two people, Steve and someone I can't recognise from this distance, are not quick enough. They are over powered quickly and their blood curdling screams feed the panic and fear inside the rest of us.
We fall back inside the Church; this is where we will make our stand and then our fight back. Deliberately the armoury is also within the main building and we quickly set about arming everyone. We need to get moving, there is probably a dozen or so zombies within the walls but leave it for an hour and there will be scores to deal with and then we would be as good as dead ourselves.
"My children," Reverend McKay proclaims as he stands at the alter with his arms wide open "God has given us a stern test. We must defeat the beast and return to the road of the righteous. Go now my Gods Army and I will pray for your safe return." Bloody typical, we all go outside to fight for our lives and he stays in here nice and safe, a true leader, just like the rest of them.
Wayne separates six people and informs them they will be in charge of making the barrier. All the rest of us are to engage the zombies. Wayne starts a countdown; "5..4..3..2..GO" and then he throws open the doors and in a flash spears the monster who had been banging on it since we first shut it.
We fan out and it's worse than I feared. There is just too many all close together and it's nigh on impossible to deal with one at a time. We have lost a couple of people already; one who gave up, couldn't fight, he just laid down and started crying. A zombie, once a teenage girl by the look of her, was now feeding on his throat.
I get rid of my spear into the back of the girls head and start to use my knifes. The battle is over in about ten minutes but it feels like a lifetime. We have lost five more brave people but at least they didn't die in vain as rest of us are safe for now.
The main priority now is to properly secure the front entrance, not like now with just a collection of tables and benches, and a team is picked for this task. Whilst doing this they find the body of the sentry who was supposed to have been watching the gates. He had been struck down with a crossbow bolt and had fallen down to the outside of the wall. There wasn't a lot left of his body as it had been fed on until the gates were blown. This brings our losses to eight, about a quarter of our population. So much for building a new world, we are now destroying what little we have left. Even those rotting beasts outside don't kill each other.
Wayne gathers everyone around "We can't let them get away with this. Tomorrow all, and I mean all, the men shall go to the supermarket and we shall have our revenge. I will personally feed Matt piece by piece to the zombies!" There is no cheering like after some of his other speeches, in fact quite a bit of sobbing can still be heard. "Everyone get to bed now," he orders "we will need to be fully rested tomorrow."
We all move off, people to their rooms and me to my roof. Wayne waits until everyone is gone then he leaves the yard himself.
Wayne enters his private room and locks the door. He punches the wall again and again whilst shouting "****! ****! ****!" He sits on his bed and removes his jacket. He looks down and studies the large bite wound on his forearm which is already festering. He now starts to sob. Copyright 2008 john mccuaig |
