Eyes cast downward she sat amongst the other wallflowers. The lastformal of the year before Graduation had been a rousing smash since six o’clockthat evening. Now going on midnight she saw her hope of ever being asked toparticipate dwindling to nothing. Long, slender hands elegantly smoothed out invisible wrinkles on thebrand new orchid white dress. Worrying her lower lip she slowly brought hergaze to the pulsating crowed on the dance floor. With no fear of being noticedshe openly watched couples dance, friends laugh at each other’s attics and therandom flashes of cameras being held above the crowd. As she looked through thecrowd her eyes came in contact with a set of startling sapphire blue ones thatlay in a handsome face from across the dance floor. Quickly lowering her gaze once more, she squeezed hereyes shut hoping that he had not noticed her stare. Nervously rubbing her handstogether she waited a few moments before looking about her once more. The blueseyes and handsome face had disappeared into the abyss of dancers that movedbefore her. Shaking her head over her own disappointment she again began tocontemplate the invisible wrinkles on her gown. To her amazement, as she lookeddown, a pair of black dress shoes appeared on the floor in front of her. Eyeslarge with wonder and confusion she slowly glided her gaze up the bodyconnected to the shoes and met the stare of startling sapphire eyes. With awarm and gentle smile he held out his hand and waited. After a slighthesitation she shyly lifted her long fingers and placed them over his up turnedpalm. With a subtle tug and a breath-taking smile he led her on to the dancefloor for the last slow dance of the night. She danced with in the circle of his strong arms, resting her head uponhis shoulder as he placed his on top of hers. This was a sweet reprieve fromthe wallflower wall. Or at least that is what she said to her grandchildrenwhen they asked how she had met their Grandfather.
