The large town was buzzing with life. People walked aimlessly around. Mellinda couldn’t help but be amazed, this was the biggest town that she had ever encountered. It was like a maze ready to be figured out. Roads linked to streets that linked to smaller streets. As amazing as the tall buildings was the rolling green hills that surrounded the town. Stray dogs trotted their way around people; an occasional person stopping to bicker at them. Kobar led his small group to the far end of town to a paddock. It was a nursery where mothers dropped their kids off. Deric looked uneasy, his skin was pasty white. The cold was getting worse. Kobar stopped at the gate, a horse whinnied as he intruded her space. He just waved it off and opened the gate. An evil grin spread across his face as they uneasily walked in. “There is only one day of the year when he is free to do as he wishes.” He said manically. “And if you guessed right its today…so have fun.” Mellinda’s eyes shot wide open. There is going to be blood shed today. Jesse began to fidget and twitch. She tried to hold him back but he was too frantic. He ran off into the crowd of children. She went to run after him but was stopped when Deric violently began to throw up. She had to go to his aid. “We have to leave now!” She demanded. Deric ignored her and fell to the ground. His body began to fit. His arms and legs began to bend out of shape. His body soon began to sprout gray hair, no not hair…it was fur. Mellinda stepped back wide eyed with disbelief. He couldn’t be, Jesse was the werewolf, and he was the one that ran out from the forest. Mellinda fell to her knees stunned, she didn’t know what to believe. Krisayos began to shake her madly, screams poured from her mouth but to Mellinda they were only burbles. She watched in horror as Deric’s body finished its last twisted alteration into a large wolf. “Don’t you see Mellinda?” Deric said in a strange gravelly voice. “I was the werewolf all along. Jesse continuously tried to stop me. That’s why you saw him coming out of the forest. Everything that I told you was a lie…Kobar insisted that I make friends with you.” “But.” Mellinda whispered. “Why?” “I like you Mellinda. I couldn’t kill you. Why do you think you weren’t on the dinner menu? But now if you don’t mind…lunch is served.” The wolf licked its lips before charging at the screaming children. Jesse blocked the way, his body trembling with fear. “You will not take anymore victims!” He yelled. “Not while I’m here!” “Move out of the way brother!” Deric yelled back. “I do not wish to hurt you, but I will if a have to!” Deric’s body collided with Jesse’s. Jesse threw punches at the animals head, but it seemed undeterred by them. The urge to eat overpowered pain. Mellinda took Krisayos into her arms and ran for the frantic horse She jumped the fence and took hold of the reins. She threw Krisayos into the saddle then jumped on herself. She didn’t take notice of the crowd of horrified adults, Kobar was nowhere in sight. The horse crashed through the gate and pounded its way towards the oversized wolf. Mellinda watched as it ripped into Jesse’s throat, he eyes instantly filled with tears. But there was no time for crying, She had to get Deric to chase her. She threw a shoe at him and began to yell incoherent words. He chased after her forgetting about the children. The horse cleared over the far fence and made its way to a dirt road cut clean into a mountain side. The beast ignored the children dashing out of his way, he didn’t want them, he wanted Mellinda. For long Deric fought against him, not allowing him to have her. Drool and blood dripped from his fur as he thought about finally tasting her flesh. She was a prize to be won. ---The beast and Deric fought each other to take control over the body. The beast’s want to taste blood battled against Deric’s want to save Mellinda. “You will not win this time little fool.” Its voice echoed in Deric’s mind. “I’ve been waiting for too long to taste her blood!”“You cant do this…I love her.” Deric rebelled. “I will do as I please child!”“I will not let you!” “It doesn’t matter if you do or don’t …I will taste her!”The wolf’s will to taste blood overpowered Deric. The mind war was over.--- The road was just ahead. The horse heaved itself up the steep hill, and with one last push it reached the road. It was flat even ground that would make running easier. The horse whinnied with triumph but the werewolf was still close to its heals. Krisayos clutched at the horses mane as Mellinda leaned forward urging the horse on. Soon enough the wolf was nipping at the horses legs, it tried to kick it away. All the sudden a fork in the road appeared. One led up the cliff and the other narrowed dramatically. Either way the werewolf would have an advantage. She steered the horse right and it continued up the hill. The creature kept going straight, it was too busy attacking the horse to notice the fork. It gave out a howl in frustration. Mellinda let out a sigh but it was relief short lived. A boulder blocked their way. The road next to them was at least two meters down. There was no choice, the horse had to jump. The beast watched as the horse leaped from the cliff. The horse landed directly in front of it causing it to skid. The horse struggled to regain ground before it pounded off once more. The werewolf shook the incident off and charged after its lunch. The road began to steer away from the cliff. Trees began to enclose around the road until there was nothing but trampled dirt as a path. The werewolf leaped from the path and took cover into the heavy brush. Mellinda looked around but there was no sign of him. “Deric!” She yelled. “I know you can hear me…I know that you’re still in there! Please Deric try to fight against the beast. Don’t let him beat you!” A howl came from the woods. The werewolf jumped from the brush, it barely missed the horse. “Forget it feeble woman!” The beast replied. Deric is no more.” “No he is still in there. Please Deric I know you don’t want him to hurt me. I love you Deric, I love you like a mother would her son…and I know that you love me!” Deric’s faint glow of existence suddenly flared, the wolf howled in protest. “I love you too. You showed me a mothers love…and for that I am grateful.” The charging beast slid to a stop. It sat on the path as it watched the horse gallop away. Mellinda looked back and watched the werewolf grow smaller and smaller until it was a small speck amongst the bush. Tears fell from her face and stung her eyes. The horse slowed its pace as it broke away from the hold of the bush. A high pitched howl sounded from the woods, then there was silence. Mellinda’s heart pounded painfully against her ribcage. Sobs escaped her mouth, Krisayos kept quiet. The horse kept galloping at an even pace along a dirt road that entwined its way through rolling green hills. The sun was high in the sky. Birds flew about merely as if nothing ever happened. The memory of this day will haunt Mellinda’s dreams for all eternity. Copyright 2008 rachael |
