Slumbered Breath

In the dark and dismal air
I hear the call of death
Striking panic with a thought
Or gasp of bloodied breath

Terrified to fall asleep
I keep a busy mind
Running with uncertainties
And leaving hope behind

Knowing when my energy
Is destiute of fight
Slumber becomes imminent
To dream within the night

When it does I'm wondering
Will it decline to wake
Or find whatever's left of me
Was far too much to take?

....

You manage to carry heavy subjects in such light light verse. You also write with depth making the verse pattern work for you. Good.
