The rain poured down heavily. How could such a lovely place feel so depressing? Deric and Krisayos huddled under a great weeping willow with Mellinda. The river flowed furiously as it hurled itself over the cliff, the roaring sound was deafening. Kobar sat happy in his large tent with Jesse. He didn’t take much notice of the three sitting out in the cold. Jesse couldn’t help but look back at them, every time he did Kobar will give him a slap across the head. “Stop worrying about them.” He growled. “They’re fine.” Jesse just nodded and hunched over the table. Kobar gave him a sneer and stared out. He let out a scoff when his eyes laid upon the pathetic trio. He smiled at Jesse then got back to eating dinner. The rain slowly began to thin, the clouds were beginning to disperse. The stars that night were especially bright. As Kobar wolfed down his dinner Jesse stared out at the sky. How he wished to be free and spread his wings. But no he was trapped in a small cage and his wings shrivelled as he slowly lost hope. Mellinda too stared up at the stars, watching contently as each one took a turn to sparkle. She could feel the shivers of the two children. The rain had left them damp and cold. ***** Each one took turns sniffling; they all had caught a cold. Kobar was furious, he stomped the wet grass flat. Jesse stood quietly behind him, too scared to say anything. Mellinda stared at him evilly, it wasn’t their fault, it was his. The children shivered non-stop under her arms. The morning sun had warmed them but not enough to stop them from shivering. Fluffy white clouds crept across the sky trying to hide the fact that they helped in the fault. Even the world around them mocked her. Birds chirped as if they laughed. Bugs buzzed about mockingly. Mellinda could feel the anger rise in her. She had enough of being blamed on something she didn’t do, that she had no control over. This man stole her from her life and threw her into a pit of darkness, never to see the light again. She was happy and content; she didn’t care if people rejected her, that’s their fault. What about Krisayos? She didn’t choose to be blind, she was born that way…and yet her family still rejected her. Her anger reached its peak, now there was no holding back. Mellinda pulled away from the children and stomped her way to Kobar. Her eyes flared with anger and her face twisted into a scowl. Kobar readied himself for what ever will happen. Jesse backed away he didn’t want to be included in with the fight. Deric held Krisayos close as they began to lower to the ground. Everything seemed to fade from Mellinda’s view, except for the bulk of a man that stood ready before her. “You stupid! Stupid fool>” She yelled. “You have no idea what its like!” She lifted her hand and swung it around. A loud clap noise sounded as her hand collided with Kobar’s face. Everything went silent; nothing dared to make a sound. Kobar fell stunned to the ground, the grass crunching under his weight, a red handprint glowed on one of his cheeks. “You left us out in the rain! And you dare blame us from getting a cold!” Mellinda’s voice kept on rising. She was so loud that even the babbling river couldn’t be heard. “While your happy living it up in your tent we are left out in the cold! These children don’t deserve this kind of treatment!” Mellinda bent down face to face with him and grabbed his shirt. “Things better change or there will be consequences.” She hissed into his ear. She let go and let him drop to the ground. Straightening herself up she made her way back to the shivering children. Jesse stood perplexed, he didn’t know whether to help Kobar or not. One evil glance from him made Jesse rush to his father’s side. Mellinda watched as the scrawny young man sling Kobar over his shoulder and awkwardly shuffle off. Kobar looked back, his eyes narrowed. The now proud young woman walked away, there was nothing else to add. Mellinda set the damp clothes to dry out in the sun. Jesse gave her extra clothes that he didn’t use, she thanked him with a smile. It was obvious that Kobar was taking his anger out on him. Screaming and yelling would occasionally be heard coming from the tent. Mellinda braided Krisayos’ hair as she played with her doll. Deric ran around trying to catch rabbits. He was fast but they were faster. Mellinda approached an old oak tree that stood alone in a small clearing. Birds flew from branch to branch in a rhythmic motion. The damp green grass dramatically bent over as a breeze passed through. It was like a green sea, the grass making soft waves. It was Mellinda’s newly found place to hide away from the world. She discovered it as she went hunting for firewood the night before. She decided to bring Krisayos with her, even though she wouldn’t be able to appreciate the beauty; she would be able to appreciate the peace. Mellinda led her to the base of the trunk. A naturally made chair from the old trees roots welcomed them. The two sat quietly, each one taking in the blissful peace. A squirrel decided to join them. Mellinda reached out to pet it but it scurried off. She smiled as it pooped its head up from the grass. Krisayos continued on playing with her doll, humming notes as she stoked its hair. Mellinda held the small girl close, gradually joining in with the humming. Deric continued to chase rabbits not noticing that Krisayos and Mellinda had disappeared. He was getting better. He was able to get up close without them noticing. It was great practice for him. Copyright 2008 rachael |
