The next morning camp was packed and ready to head for the next town. Mellinda sat at the back of the carriage. Kobar guided the horses with Jesse next to him. If there were anything that he hated it would be kidnapping children. Mellinda watched as the forest began to slowly shrink. She hated coming along, not that she had a choice. Deric sat quietly in her lap, his small boy rocking side to side as they come to bumps in the road. It was unusual because they would always leave the tent and other belongings behind.

It was midday when the carriage was brought to a stop. Mellinda jumped from the carriage. Her body was stiff and she needed to stretch out the cramps. Deric eventually woke and gave out a yawn. Mellinda helped him down to the ground. Town was only a couple of meters away but Kobar never liked to drive through them. Mellinda held Deric’s hand as they walked into town. Kobar pulled a hood over his head so that his face was hidden. He looked around for any sign of children.

“Deric go find some children to play with.” He ordered.

Mellinda gave the frightened child a smile of reassurance and let go of his hand. Deric ran off and steered off left into a back street. There was no sign of life. The town was abandoned and by the looks of it it’s been only a week. She looked at Kobar to see if he noticed but he was too distracted grumbling to himself. Jesse walked behind making sure that he was walking on the shadow. Mellinda broke away from the group and headed down a dusty old path between two large houses. Kobar didn’t notice and kept strolling towards the end of the small town. Every building was closed off, nothing was left open. The random sound of a shutter hitting against the side of a building would make Jesse jump.

As the sun began to set Deric came back and someone trailed behind him. It was a small girl; her long black hair covered her face as she watched the ground. Kobar pulled back his hood and took a look at the child. She stood still before him, her eyes never leaving the ground. Kobar lifted her face with a gentle finger under the chin. Her white eyes seemed larger than a normal child’s. He waved a hand in front of her face but she didn’t react. The little girl was blind. Kobar’s face lit up with a smile, perfect he thought to himself. He sent Jesse out to look for Mellinda as he led the children back to the carriage. Deric led the small girl on as he dawdled behind Kobar.

“Keep up boy.” Kobar demanded.

Deric took the young girls hand and quickened the pace. As the trio settled themselves onto the carriage Mellinda arrived with Jesse. She noticed that Deric was talking to someone. Her heart dropped; yet another victim. She saw the girl that was now cradled in Deric’s arms, she was at least six. Her body went numb, she was too young, and the situation was getting out of hand. She noticed that the young girl was sobbing. Her clothes were dirty and she was dangerously thin. She must have been left behind when the town’s people left; obviously no one cared to come back. Mellinda took the girl into her arms and started to sing a soft lullaby. Soon enough the sobbing had stopped and the child was sleeping.

They didn’t head back to the usual hideaway, instead Kobar steered the carriage south. Mellinda played with the girl’s hair. Deric slept heavily against her arm. Everything was quiet and peaceful. Soon enough Mellinda fell asleep.

“Wake up!” A voice shouted, penetrating the sleeper’s dreams.

Kobar untied the horses and led them to a nearby tree. Mellinda woke the children awake. The trio walked down hand in hand to a bank. The peaceful sound of running water and birds singing merrily cheered Mellinda up. She completely forgot everything that has happened over the past week. The new girl walked down to the water and let it pass over her feet. The waters icy cold touch made her body jolt. Mellinda kept a close watch on her. The clear blue water flowed further down to a small waterfall that continued the water flow further south. Great willow trees covered the area, it was a great change.

Camp was set up before it was too dark to see. The small campfire crackled and hissed as Mellinda fed it another log. Everyone was quiet; the only sound that could be heard was chirping crickets. The atmosphere was light, even the stars seemed brighter. Mellinda sat back down next to the new child. She finally realised that she never got to know her name, for the whole afternoon she never asked. She looked at the small child and smiled as she played with a doll.

“That’s a pretty doll.” Mellinda chimed. “May I see her?”

The girl hesitated at first but eventually handed over the doll. It was a raggedy old thing. One of her button eyes was missing and her blue dress was dirty and torn. She toyed with its red woollen hair. She remembered her old doll.

“What’s her name?” She asked.

The girl didn’t answer; she sat there and stared up at Mellinda with her big pale eyes. She opened her mouth and tried to talk, only incoherent words came out. She lowered her head and tears began to stream down her face. The poor girl never learnt how to talk. No one took the time to teach her. Mellinda wrapped her arms around the saddened child and began to rock side to side. Small sobs sounded out into the night along with the crickets tune.

“Hush now lets see. Do you have a name?” Mellinda asked

The girl shook her head in reply.

“Ok. Well we need a pretty name for a pretty girl.”

The girl cheered up, a smile beamed across her face. She was excited that she was getting a name after six years of being a nobody.

“You look like a Krisayos to me. What do you think?”

The girl rapidly nodded her head, it was perfect. The girl began to grow drowsy fro the rhythmic rocking. In no time she was asleep. Her new name burning brightly within her thoughts.
