It was the night of the full moon. Children from all over huddled frightened together. There was at least ten of them excluding Mellinda and Deric. Everyone was sleeping. Deric now depended deeply on Mellinda, he would stay by her side day and night. Being at the prime age of twenty-one Mellinda cared for most of the children. She found that Deric was the youngest. He was only nine and the rest of the children ranged from twelve to seventeen. He had decided to sleep with the other children that night. A loud howl called from deep within the surrounding forest. Mellinda thought nothing of it and went back to sleep.

The next morning Mellinda found that all of the children were gone. Deric was asleep in her arms; he must have crawled in next to her late in the night. She freed her arm from under Deric and called for the missing children. There was no answer. There was no sign of life. All was quiet except for a twig snapping. She jumped back in fright, Staring into the area in which the sound came. She could hear steps heading towards her direction. From out of the dark a young man stepped out. It was Jesse.

“Jesse!?” Mellinda called in a high-pitched scream.

His body was drenched in sweat. Mellinda caught him as he began to collapse to the ground. She could feel his heart beat rapidly within his chest. She hated Jesse from taking her away but she couldn’t just leave him, it wasn’t in her nature.  Jesse’s eyes fluttered open and stared up at Mellinda’s face. For the first time He saw her for her true beauty. Her emerald green eyes stared down into his, they pictured her emotion to him – hate and compassion. He tried to speak but her full cherry red lips hushed him quiet. He watched her charcoal black hair bounce in the morning breeze as he drifted off into unconsciousness.

That afternoon Jesse bashfully approached Mellinda. She waited patiently for him to speak, Deric on the other hand fidgeted by her side. Jesse tried to summon up the courage to talk but was unable to; he began to mutter under his breath. Mellinda couldn’t help but laugh, Jesse was too shy to talk to her.

“Jesse…what do you want?” She asked politely.

“I just…wanted to…say that I was…sorry.” Jesse muttered. “I mean for kidnapping you.”

“I don’t think I could ever forgive you.” Mellinda knew that he was an unwilling participant in the abduction. He was Kobar’s son and yet he was treated like a dog. “You did a horrible thing to me. You stole me away from my life…but…since you did apologise I will forgive you. After all you have been nothing but nice to me.”

Jesse stood amazed, he didn’t expect that kind of reply. Even though he was a few years older than Mellinda he still felt younger than her. He really had no one his age to connect with. And now this beautiful young woman has entered his life. He quickly looked away from Mellinda his face turning red. Mellinda blushed herself but quickly waved the experience away.

“But this still doesn’t make us friends.” She stated, she didn’t want to get too close to the young man.

Jesse nodded with disappointment and slowly walked away. Deric was stunned by Mellinda’s reaction. Mellinda took his hand and led him off into the opposite direction. She sat down next to a wooden peg that had been pounded deep into the ground. She pondered to herself about the whereabouts of the children. All of them disappeared without a trace and Jesse staggering from the forest. Something was up and she didn’t like it.

“Deric I need to ask you a couple of important questions.” She said to the small child.

Deric nodded in reply. He knew by the tone of her voice that she was serious. He sat waiting for the questions to bombard him but they didn’t come straight away. Mellinda though for a while. She had to ask him the questions in a way that he would understand. She slowly asked each question in her head, each one modified to suit a nine year olds understanding.

“Alright Deric. You have to answer these questions honestly.” Mellinda began. “When your sister ran away…was there ever a body?”

Deric sat contemplating for a while. “No they said that they couldn’t find one.”

“So she just went missing.” Deric nodded in reply. “Have you ever seen Jesse come out of the forest after all the children have gone missing?” Again he nodded. “Did they disappear every time the moon was full?”

“Ummmmm…Yea they did.”

Mellinda leaned back on the peg and sighed. She now knew why children were being brought back to this spot. She looked at Deric, one last question had to be asked.”

“Deric…were you and the other children…orphans?”

Deric nodded once again. It may seem cruel but Mellinda was relieved. She did mourn the loss of the small souls, but at least there were no parents suffering from the loss of their child. Her head fell back onto the top of the peg. Deric crawled into her lap and pulled her arms around his small body. Mellinda stroked the young boys hair. Deric wondered why She had asked him the questions, what were they relevant to? He just sat quietly keeping his thoughts to himself. Mellinda tried to fight the possibility of Jesse being what she thought he was. She had thought that all the stories she heard were only told to scare children. Now she was in a fairytale that pulled her deeper into its untold lines. It was like the path was set before her…sh.e had to stop Jesse
