Anargyros, hero of many battles and savior of Apamea, followed the smoke trails until he came over the hill and saw what appeared to be a small-unorganized army milling about in the meadow below. Approaching carefully, hand on sword, he came upon one of the men staring up at the top of the hill about a mile away.
"What happens here?" he asked the heavily armed soldier, "Is there a battle to be fought?"
The soldier barely acknowledged his presence, "No, there is only the maiden on the hill", he pointed to the hill that the others were staring at, "And the small matter of the flying monster that circles her."
"Who is she?" Anargyros tried to focus on the maiden but the distance was to great, "And what of the monster?"
The soldier shook his head, "Truthfully, we know not the answer to either question. Yet it is said that she is the most beautiful maiden on earth. The monster makes it hard to prove."
It was Anargyros' turn to shake his head, "Why not simply kill the monster?"
The soldier smiled, "Can you not see the bodies spread across the valley?"
Upon a more careful observation of the valley he realized that what he thought were shrubs were bodies, dozens of them. "Why does everybody merely stand and stare?"
"That I can answer with certainty." the soldier started as he walked away, "Courage."
"Judgment I lack", Anargyros shouted to the man's back, "and sometimes intelligence I lack, but courage - I do not. I shall end this."
Anargyros turned on his heels and headed in the direction of the maiden and the monster. As he came near enough to make out the maiden sitting on a huge boulder at the top of the hill he found that she was indeed the fairest maiden he had ever seen.
There was little time to enjoy the view, however, as the flying monster had spotted him and was flying directly at him, intent on his destruction. The battle was long and the battle was bloody, but in the end Anargyros was the victor. Exhausted from the battle, he approached the maiden.
"Greetings fair maiden, I am Anargyros. You are now free to go as you please."
Silence greeted him. He stepped closer and saw that there were tears running down her beautiful cheeks and sadness in her eyes.
"You are free. You may rejoin your family, your friends; why do you shed tears of sorrow at such a time as this?"
The maiden turned to him and when she spoke her sadness was clear, "My father is the one you call the Sky King, my mother, Mother Earth. My father believes that the earth has become totally evil and wishes to destroy it. I am here because my mother believes my father is wrong. As long as there is one good soul, the rest may survive."
Anargyros was stunned, "You are bait?"
"I am the final test for mankind."
"And what of the monster that I have slain? A friend?"
"The ‘monster' you have so proudly killed was my defender, my champion. The good soul need not be human - although perhaps, he was more humane than most men that walk the earth."
"And you? What would you choose? Do you side with your mother? Your father?"
"I take no sides. I shall live an eternity with or without your world; yet still, I do not yearn to see your world destroyed."
"And if you do not have a defender, and you are taken?"
"If I am taken your world shall be destroyed."
As he heard those last words, he once again became aware of his surroundings and looked back over his shoulder to the small army that had assembled on the next hill. One by one he could see the soldiers breaking off and heading in his direction. He had just turned to face the approaching combatants when he heard the words,
"Who shall champion me now, Anargyros?"
Anargyros, hero of many battles and savior of Apamea, drew his sword and waited.
