A mans scream could be heard from down a valley. The fog had been unusually thick for the particular time of day. The man’s eyes were wide with terror and his chest heaved rapidly as his lungs struggled for air. His body shook with exhaustion as he tried hard to stand still. No sound could be heard, even in the light breeze no leaves rustled. There was something out there and he knew it. A small twig snap sounded and sent him off in the opposite direction. He knew what it was and he didn’t want to encounter it again. After what felt like hours of running his legs began to cramp and he began to slow. He stopped and stood within a clearing. The man knew he could never outrun it. He could hear the beast approaching fast, before long it stood before him. Its face was mere inches away from his and its snout breathed out hot, reeking breath. Its steely black eyes stared into his but the man just stared back. The hideous form towered over him; he looked miniature compared to it. The loud beast let out a large howl and then all was quiet. The giant woods were left silent once more. Mellinda sat daydreaming in her garden. The sun beamed down on her and her skin was turning pink. She planted one more radish before retiring for the day. As she pulled herself up from the ground a man approached her. He looked down at her with small brown ours, his scruffy brown beard randomly twitching. He wasn’t from the village; in fact Mellinda has never seen the man. He greeted her with his name, Kobar. Mellinda just gave him a smile and walked away, she didn’t want to stay in the heat any longer. But the man just chased after her. “I wish to buy some vegetables from you.” He yelled after her. “Oh…well…I haven’t much, It’s been a bad season.” Mellinda replied. “I don’t think I can spare any.” The man pulled a small pouch out from his over coat. “I will pay you well.” Mellinda narrowed her eyes; she didn’t trust this man. She kept her distance as he tried to get closer. He jiggled the bag so that the money would rattle about. Mellinda stood her ground. “I’ll give you the whole bag for just a few vegetables.” He persuaded. Mellinda let out a sigh. “Fine what do you want?” “I’ll take a couple of potatoes and carrots…and some corn too.” Mellinda walked down the small trail that ran between the crops. As she knelt down to dig up some carrots a dark figure ran out from behind her house. Before she could react the young man had her pinned to the ground. Kobar pulled a length of rope from a pocket and tied it around Mellinda’s wrists. Then the young man pulled a dusty old sack over her head. Mellinda screamed for help but she knew that no one would hear her; she lived too far away from the village. She was pulled to her feet and dragged off. She tried to fight free but only tired herself out. The air in the sack became thicker and she began to elapse into unconsciousness. She was thrown head first into a carriage and taken away from her home. **** Mellinda woke up with a start. Blood matted her hair and the sun stung her eyes. Her wrists were sore from where the roped chafed her skin. She tried to get up but her head pounded viciously. She tried to stretch her legs only for them to be stopped by a heavy iron chain. The rusting chain led to a large wooden peg that had been pounded deep into the ground. Her head lay on top of it, her arm shading her eyes from the sun. It was late afternoon. The terrain had drastically changed from flat grass plains to mountainous bush. “Would you like some water?” A boys voice asked. Mellinda nodded without looking at the boy. Her mouth was dry and her lips were cracking. She snatched the cup and sculled the water down. The boy let out an amused laugh and took the empty cup from her. The boy left then shortly came back. “My name is Deric.” What’s yours?” He asked. “Its Mellinda.” She grunted in reply. “If you behave they will unchain you…that is if you don’t try to escape. But I think they’ll keep you chained for a couple of days. I’ve been here a while…kids come and go…you’re the oldest I’ve ever seen. I had a sister but she’s dead now, they said that she drowned while trying to escape.” Mellinda half listened. The boy seemed happy talking about nothing too important. She watched as he scratched his head, his fingers becoming hopelessly entangled in his blonde hair. His eyes became teary as he tried to free his hand. “Here let me help you.” Mellinda offered. Deric accepted the offer. He sat patiently in Mellinda’s lap as she went through his hair. He also had a bad case of lice. “So where are you from?” She asked. “Dallinor…its far from here. We had to travel two days to get here.” Deric answered. “But your village is close…where are you from?” “Just a little way from Kardin…there your hand is free.” Deric gave Mellinda a hug. He offered her another drink and she accepted greedily. The boy sat without a word, he just had a giant smile on his face. Mellinda gave him the cup and smiled back. “If you like I could get rid of some lice for you.” Mellinda recommended. Mellinda shifted through the boy’s hair until it was too dark to see. Deric thanked her and asked if he could sleep with her that night. Mellinda just shrugged and allowed him to lie next to her. Within minutes he was fast asleep leaving the young woman to her thoughts. She stared up at the sky and watched as the stars sparkled above her. The moon was approximately a week away from being full. Thoughts swirled around in her head, each one different from the other. When the moon reached its peak in the sky Mellinda began to drift off to sleep herself. Copyright 2008 rachael |
