God looked down upon his Earth, watching the lone figure sitting on the mountaintop.  He smiled a sad smile as he considered the tormented soul, and wondered at the damage done in so little time.  Not to his world, no, there is nothing anyone or anything could do to remove the perfection of his creation. The only true damage suffered was that done to the personal core of its inhabitants.  Although even the damage suffered was of no true consequence in the great plan, it did still hurt his heart when he saw suffering.

God floated down from his heavens and approached the figure, "Greetings Light Bringer."  Without waiting for a reply, he sat next to the lone figure.

"You mock me?" the figure looked at God, and the distain was apparent.  The figure didn't bother to hide the venom in his voice.

"Mock you?" God asked.  "Mockery is a human trait.  Why would I want to invest in mockery?"

     "Why do you come here?

"I saw your despair, and sought to sooth it."

     "Revel in it, I believe."

God shook his head as he gazed out across the plains, "You still blame me?"

"Was it not you that cast me out?"

"Truly, it was.  Was it also not myself that invited you to return?"

     "You knew I could not."

"Would not Light Bringer, you choose to remain apart."  God paused as he looked upon the figure, he could see the many centuries of anguish that had chiseled itself into his face, the centuries of wear on his body.  "Have you not yet seen the folly you have brought upon yourself?"

     Light Bringer sat silent.

God continued, "I cast you upon the Earth that you may have time to think of your transgressions, and instead of seeking answers you sought revenge.  Where one might have thought you would seek the truth in things, you went instead on a crusade to unto my teachings, spreading lies, decadence, and murder.  So filled with revenge and hatred were you that you even began to believe your own teachings.  You fell under the spell of the very humans that you sought to command."

Light Bringer looked at God and his anger almost matched his despair when he spoke, "You know nothing of what I have done, or that which I feel."

God smiled, "I know everything that everybody feels.  Forget not with whom you speak.  I know why you sit here today.  I know why you feel the despair you feel.  You yourself have quenched the very fire you sought to foster - forget that it is all illusion.  You have defeated yourself, Light Bringer, by your very actions you are undone."

Suspicion rose on Light Bringer's face, "What do you mean illusion?  What have you done to me?"

God laughed, "What have I done?  Listen, and I shall tell you what I have seen.  Then you can tell me who has done what.  You sit here now because your great plan has failed. It is written that on this day your followers shall find a virgin believer of age and she would give herself to you - thus making your power on this Earth unstoppable, yes?"  Light Bringer started to speak but God stopped him.

"Light Bringer, your belief structure has its foundation in decadence, does it not?  Your very teachings contradict your mission; you cannot find a virgin that worships you.  So you sit here, awash in self-pity and hatred."

Light Bringer's face was expressionless as he stared at nothing across the plains.  The nothing he looked at was the same as the nothing that he had felt as he came to the realization that his great plan to change the destiny of the Earth would not be realized.  There was nothing inside and nothing outside - there was nothing.

God continued, "My son," God reached out and turned Light Bringer to face him, "that is not the greatest folly of it all.  I spoke earlier of illusion.  This very thing that you are attempting to perform, from whence does it come?"

Light Bringer became defiant, "It is written..."

God interrupted, "By man.  Humans.  Your worshipers wrote this thing that you attempted to perform - and you believe it possible.  Have you been on the Earth so long that you forget who you are?  What you are?  How did it come to Light Bringer following, instead of leading man?  Is your hatred so strong that you can place your faith in man, yet could not put your faith in me?  Come, leave your hatred behind and return home."

   "I cannot."

God sighed, "No, Light Bringer, you will not.  You will not know the truth, although it is before you now.  Even as you speak to me, your creator - your father, you seek to hide your own true thoughts from yourself in a blanket of pride.  Do you think that I do not know you Light Bringer?  Do you think I do not love you?  Who could love you more than I?  The humans?  They seek only your power."

God stood and slowly rose into the heavens, "It is well, and truly you are not ready.  You must discover on your own that you search in vain for something you will not allow me to give you, something you will not even recognize when you find it.  Forgive yourself Lucifer, and return home.  Heavens doors are always open."

What was your reasoning for calling him light bringer when God as we have been told is the Light.

actually
I believe 'light bearer' is the straight across translation. most folks are unaware. I took a little artistic stretch in changing it to 'bringer'.

This story is great. It's like reading part of a well written fantasy novel but with the whole God/Satan thing mixed in. I really enjoyed it.

Interesting, enjoyed reading it and for a while I was confused as to whom Light Bringer was but then that last part just made every clear. I like your style. :)

Definite good work... Stories where god speaks/acts can be boring because well, god is god and can do anything right. So when you have god act less god like it is a treat.
