The Forbidden Hug

They were together talking to one another. They were both aware that they had not seen each other for decades. Their union stirred youth in the sight of each other’s face. They were gazing at each other and feeling like they once did more than eighteen years ago.

To him, she looked exactly the same. He wondered how she could retain that same look in spite of all the years gone. He loved the way he felt around her again. Everything was new and fresh and anything might happen.

And they were talking, and they were laughing. It was too good to be true and yet, it was.

Suddenly, he began to look at her, to look at her body, and to see the lovely arch in her back. He was fiercely seized to take her into his arms and draw her entire body into his. He did so without her consent. In that brief moment, he lost control and consciousness of what he was doing with her.

When he came to, he was looking at her again, looking at the alarm on her face. They stared at each other. He was conscious he had made the same mistake as he did eighteen years ago. And then he remembered that this was not the first time he did this:

It was perhaps when he was a teenager, when the two of them spent a weekend in his mother’s house without any guardian supervision. They were all alone They drew very close to each other, sharing some innocent intimacies, believing at the time that they would eventually marry. They believed they had very unique feelings, feelings which would survive any hardship or circumstance.

The story got out. Evidently, the girl had a change of heart. She related “his” behavior to her parents. Her father commanded him right then that he should never do this to her daughter again. And now, he remembered.

He quickly looked away from her, settling his eyes lower to the ground. He was not ashamed. He felt no remorse. He only allowed himself a moment for her to react.

She continued to stare at him.

Finally, he said, “We have to talk about what just happened. We have to talk about the hug.”

She said, “You weren’t supposed to do that.”

He could not understand why it was wrong. He perceived her father’s words not as a commandment but only as a suggestion. After all, they were now two grown adults well into their thirties. Yet, she did have a kind of power over him, a chastening effect, and he respected this when he could remember they were cousins.

Wow, what a mesmerizing twist. I'm actually not even disgusted by the story's meaning, but it's a sad event. I thought the title was interesting so I gave it a read, and I guess you could say I never expected this...Great read, I think this one will be in my head for a while.
