Making plans to do something or go somewhere when you are a Mom? In my experience, it has been impossible to do this. Kids are like mini chaotic events that are constatly around us. Sure, we think things are going fine, so we make plans to go somewhere and spend the day visiting with a friend. As soon as we hang up the phone after making such plans smiles abound, we turn and look at these balls of chaos and realize, with a sigh, its just not going to happen today. Suddenly, your baby is teething and screaming from the pain of what feels like to her gigantic boulders poking through her little gums. Your 9 and 6 year olds are fighting, not just with words mind you, but actually FIGHTING. As you make your way through the chunks of hair falling slowly to the floor all around the room and the teeth that will inevitably follow, you think why? why does this happen EVERY time? The answer is simple my friends: Child Radar. If you have children, you know what I'm talking about. Their little radar screens start blipping immediately when they hear us (or not hear us, I think they can just sense it) say "OK, see you in about an hour then." and they're off. maybe they don't even realize it but I swear it happens. That is why we stay-at-home parents are reduced to watching the clock waiting for our spouses to come home so that we can meet them at the door with, " Hey! Glad your home, I'll be back soon!" and rush out the back door, leaving them standing in the doorway with a confused look on their faces and all of their junk from work still in their hands. You see, it is only then that we can escape their radar and make a spontaneous break for it even if its for that half hour at the coffee shop with a friend and being childless where we then do nothing but discuss our children and all the funny little things they do all day long.... like the baby putting on all five pairs of her 9 year old sisters underpants fresh from their package around her knees and walking/shuffling around with them on all afternoon. So, that said, Good luck and best wishes for quick escapes to you all! Copyright 2008 Amie Kerlin |
