James asked me if I really wanted to ride through Torris, and I told him yes, even though I really didn’t. I could meet Mr. Benjamin, or Cruz, or Maylia Turoto. I thought hard about Turoto, and I worried about the safety of every person who has ever come in contact with me, and I wondered if Jerry was still alive, knowing Turoto was a skilled tracker.

I put it out of my mind as we entered Torris. No one spared a glance at me, so we rode on, only stopping at the sheriff’s office to see if any news was around and about. I hopped off Dun, and James tied up his beautiful palomino horse. We then headed through the doors and into the Torris sheriff’s office. Sitting behind the desk was Burt Holsten, the right hand man for Benjamin and the English Channel.

            He was dead.

I didn’t know what to make of it, so I turned around and ran to Dun, and James followed. Was this a sign from Cruz, was Turoto in Torris, or was this just a crazy coincidence.

I hopped on Dun and made a dead sprint for the other end of the town, and had just made it when I heard a gun shot. I looked and James was right beside me so I never looked back.

We rode for quite a few miles whenever I pulled Dun up. James’ face was white.

“ Who was that back there, and why did the shoot above us?” James asked. This puzzled me. Shoot above us? Why would anyone……….. Uh-Oh.

“Tell me what color hat he had on James.” I said.

“ He didn’t he was bald.” James said.           At that point I figured us dead. We had just faced Maylia Turoto, and not many people lived to say that.

Maylia Turoto was born a wild Lakota Indian and was a high war chief at a young age. When soldiers came and wiped out his tribe, he became a outlaw, and a dang good one. But there was still one thing that confused him. The treasure of his people was stole by his brother, Carito Cruz. Cruz was the reason that the army had came to Maylia’s tribe and he disowned his brother.

Now Carito was chasing a group of petty cattle rustlers called the English Channel. The Channel was chasing a man named Chancellor Riggin, and he was heading to California.  Why was this man the key piece to the puzzle, and why did Maylia not know how to use him.

Maylia’s head spun many ideas. He was exhausted, having to walk across the state of Texas, but now he had a horse. “ Or mule” , he thought to himself, knowing he didn’t have the luxury of a horse. He was completely confused.

Plus the death of these Holsten guy was even more troubling. Where did all of this play in. Who shot him. Was it a message to someone, or what. Did it have to do with Chancellor. Only two names could he relate with Riggin, that he knew and understood. They where Kansas City, and Jerry Roy. He did associate some boys known as the Riddilin boys, but they ended up dead.

All that was clear to Maylia was he needed Riggin alive and he needed plenty of assets to, “ persuade” , him. And he knew the one he needed most. Someone name Dun.
