When did we become our mothers?

When did we become our mothers?

We looked at each other in dismay.

We, who once were the kids of the family,

are now the parents, the responsible ones,

and our mothers, the matriarchs, are the elders,

and our children have become

what we once were.

Where did the time go?

We are incredulous, how it had flown.

Once carefree and wild,

we had the world by the tail.

Now we watch the younger ones

make our mistakes, have our fun.

Wait, wait - we cry to them!

We don't feel old!

We don't want to be the older ones!

Turn back the clocks!

Make us young again, bring back our youth!

When did we become our mothers?

When was the baton passed to us?

Are we up for the challenge, to be the leaders,

to be the heads of the family?

We don't have a choice, it seems.

So we take the mantels with grace.

But we are NOT ready to become our grandmothers!

There is fire in us yet!

So take heed, young ones!

For some day, you will become us!
