 THE VEIL

His childhood friend, his special childhood friend was with him. They were buddies. The child was a boy much like he was at nine years of age. The boy would follow him around the house and the neighborhood. The boy waited for him to finish up the chores of the day so they could spend time together visiting aunts, uncles, or anyone both had relationships with.

The time had come, and today the both of them would visit, of all people, the boy’s mother. As they approached the house, the mother quickly opened the door for them, welcoming them with open arms. It was as if they had all not seen each other for ages. Once they had expressed sincere love for each other, they all quickly fell into playful activities such as telling jokes, playing tag, and, even, cleaning up the living room.

Nearing the end of the visit, the boy was still eager to play. As they said goodbye to the mother and were walking home in the late afternoon down the middle of the quiet street, the boy desired more playful frolicking with him, but the man had a habit of contemplating the inward self at this time of the day.

The boy had gone too far. He was now provoking the man and upsetting him. Finally, the man broke down and pleaded with the boy to learn a valued lesson. He said, “I want you to know more about what is on the inside. Yes, you can see color, and you can touch skin, but these things are of the physical. They are on the outside. There are other things you can know of, things not visible to the naked eye, nevertheless, they do exist and not all people can see or know of them. They are the spiritual.”

He continued, “You see, there is a veil that divides or separates the physical and spiritual worlds. The physical is made up of a much coarser matter. Time is linear and temporal. Range of motion is great but hindered by gravity and…”

The man stopped speaking to the boy. The boy had quickly lost interest and was already running way ahead of the man towards their home. The man might not ever be able to explain these things to the boy. The man was learning spiritual truths very personal in nature. Previously, he was led to believe that the spirit world was an entity onto itself, being separate and independent of the physical world, but now, he believed, the two worlds were interdependent upon each other.

He learned there are people and angels and gods and a whole host of living and non-living things on the other side. And very often, there are exchanges made between the two worlds. The dynamics of this interplay are mysterious.

He could not explain how or why, but he was always thinking and hoping he could gain more knowledge. He reached a point of reasoning: “It is like learning a new language, and I am just hearing the words for the first time. I can only get better at this as long as I keep applying myself to this invisible world, as long as I keep on remembering that it exists, as long as I make myself conscious to it,” he said.

This stage of reasoning was very personal, and at this time, he concluded, it should remain private. And, maybe, it could never be shared with anyone. “Maybe, this is taboo, “ he thought. “We may all have our own version of Alice in Wonderland; a realm imbedded in the chemistry of our minds. Where we are right now in the real physical world may not be the true destination of our eternity. Maybe, this world is just an image processor for the eternal world we eventually enter. And maybe the next world is just the same place as this, where we arrive at the same speculations about eternity. And maybe we had infinite worlds before us where we lived, in that, this is our true state of being, a series of never ending animations, energy never being created or destroyed, only being organized and disorganized and reorganized over and over again,” he pondered.

“What would be the reason of living this way, the idea that we now are in eternity, that it is not something in the end, but is currently, an ongoing process for all of us,” he wondered. “It may just be a law that we all follow,” he concluded. Suddenly, in a burst of happiness, he said, “I could rejoice in this. I could rejoice because, we all get to live. It feels as though I have solved a mystery, as if I have found a definitive answer that I can embrace and hope to take with me wherever I go. And, maybe I should tell other people about this, not so much with words, but with attitude.”

By the time the man reached his home, the boy had begun preparing dinner for the both of them. The boy had found a large can of beefaroni in the cupboard and was cooking it in a saucepan on the stove along with toast he had made which was being kept warm in the oven. The man was quite happy to see the boy take an interest in the welfare of both of them.

The man needed the boy, and the boy needed the man. To the man, the boy was a source of happiness and companionship, and for the boy, the man was family. He was someone the boy could love.

The veil is eternal.
