Subtle Revenge

Some say that if a person is tortured enough, whether it is by brutality or guilt, their soul suffers along with the body and mind. Sometimes even past death. Few believe that these tortured souls wallow in their misery for so long that they become connected to this world and can't leave or find peace. To counter the attack on themselves, they create misery and deceit for the people who did this to them. When they have nothing to turn to, the option of revenge is always there.

I am a prime example of a tortured soul.

I can't determine what exactly happened to me, but I know it's better I don't remember. I do know who did it to me though. I know because I hurt the person, almost killed him. I'm unsure of when it happened because time has no meaning to me anymore, but I knew I was some how connected to this man. It seemed that when I wasn't watching him or with him, I didn't exist. After following him around for a while, I realized he was the reason I was like this, the reason I was dead.

The instant this dawned on me I started trying to destroy everything in my path, including the man, but I didn't realize it was me that was doing this. All I felt was a white, hot rage and I didn't know the source of it. I finally stopped when I realized that if I killed the man, I'd be the same as him.

I didn't want to be the same as him, but at the same time I didn't want to let him get away with ending my life, and causing me to have to deal with this constant uncertainty and rage.  I thought about how to hurt him the most without harming anyone, and the idea I came up with was quite satisfying. I decided that I would take away everything he took from me, like his job, his family and his stability. Basically I was going to take away his life, without ending it.

I didn't realize how easy this would be. I had nothing else to do, so I devoted everything to making him pay. The first step was to make him think he was crazy, and then things would fall into place.

I started with something simple. Whenever he put something down, I moved it. Not too far, just enough for him to notice. I could tell it was working because every time something was moved he looked puzzled and shook his head. After awhile I got bored with this so I added some new odd occurrences.  I had just recently discovered that I could do a variety of things I never could before, I had a lot of tools at my disposal.

The Second thing I did was my personal favorite. I made the man repeat the same day over and over. He had to endure twenty Tuesdays of the exact same thing. Every morning he woke up and had two pieces of toast, one with grape jelly, and the other with peanut butter. He then said good-bye to his children, after breaking up a minor quarrel. After that he would get stuck in unusually thick traffic with a less than friendly man behind him. Then the day proceeded, long and gray until he came home to soup for supper, then went to bed because there was nothing else to do. By day three, he realized he was stuck, by day thirteen he told everyone he was stuck and they all thought he was crazy, and by day eighteen he simply went through all the motions, not really caring about anything. One of the more notable things that happened during those twenty days, was that on day twelve, he actually got out of his car to confront the man who had been yelling at him for the passed eleven Tuesdays. Unfortunately, the man was larger than he originally guessed. Long story short, the man came home with a black eye. The only part I wasn't too fond of in this step was when Wednesday finally came, the man had a far better day than I would have liked. I guessed I couldn't have my cake and eat it too.

By now, the man had begun to feel the effects of all the strange happenings that had occurred to him lately. He was already fighting with his wife because she laughed when he tried to tell her everything. I just had to push a little bit more and I knew it. This was beginning to excite me.

The Third idea I put into action was to give the man an, "out of the body" experience.  The man's day started just like every other, he got up and headed to the kitchen table for breakfast. He didn't notice anything for a while, but then he started getting angry because he thought everyone was simply ignoring him. The fact of the matter was, they couldn't see him. As far as they were concerned, he was still sound asleep in his bed. When the man finally had enough of the taunting at the table, he decided to just get ready for the day. He was shocked when he found someone sleeping in his bed, and even more shocked when he realized whom it was. Seeing himself from such a different aspect startled the guy, and he ran back into the dining room to let the rest of his family in on the phenomenon; he forgot that they weren't aware of him being there. All of this proved to be a bit much to handle, so the man ran around his house frantically screaming in hopes of someone seeing him. The site warmed my heart.

I decided that to get the maximum reaction, I would grant his wish. Just like that, his family saw him parading through their house, shouting. It was enough to cause some awkwardness.

"What on earth are you doing?"  His wife asked him halfway between disgust and disbelief. The man rambled on about seeing himself in bed. Even though his wife thought he was losing it, he persuaded her to come to the bedroom to see for herself. Naturally, the bed was empty. This sparked a bit of a disagreement between the couple. As I watched the fight unfold itself, I was glad I didn't have to do much. The man was making this terribly simple for me. Once last shove would push him into the deep end.

The last thing I did was the simplest. I simply showed myself to the man. He walked in after work and there I was, sitting in his favourite chair.  All it took was one look, I simply smiled, and watched the look of content deteriorate.  He went from unbelief, to shock, to horrified. There was even a bit of hysterical mixed in too.  He threw his things down and ran to his wife, yelling and screaming once more. That was all I needed. Now I just needed to sit back and watch.

After a while of strange quietness I heard a van come up on the driveway. In walked a well-dressed man, accompanied by two rather large men, wearing white. I smiled. The man walked in the room clearly flustered and saw his guests. He realized who they were and started backing up, but his wife blocked the way. After a while of talking, it was apparent that the man would never agree to come along willingly, so the large men stepped in. As the man, the one who killed me, got dragged to the van in the drive way, all he could yell was,

"I'm not crazy!! I'm not crazy!!"

I smiled and showed up right next to him.

"I believe you." I said.

The man instantly stopped yelling.

Well, just a tad confused, was it the mans consience who was torturing him or just something invisible. Maybe I need to read it again.

That was actually pretty funny, whether or not the guy truly deserves the cruelty from the spirit I might question, overall though it was worth the read

Enjoyable read. Man I'd love to have prank powers in the afterlife, that would be sweet.

I loved it. It actually made me chuckle a few times. I got joy from the spirit's revenge, I just would of liked to have known what the man did you to the spirit and how he died. I think it would have made the revenge a little sweeter.
