She gently pressed her fingertips to the cool glass of the mirror. Her touch created ripples, such as when a pebble is dropped into a calm pool of water. She could feel the slight throbbing of the world on the other side, requesting its release. Then heat. Intense, electrifying, searing heat. She immediately removed her hand, grasping it and exclaiming in pain. She carefully inspected her hand, but it didn't appear to be injured. She looked back into the mirror and into her own watery eyes. It was just a mirror. A simple, everyday mirror. Her encounter with the mirror was in her thoughts the next day. She was unsure as to whether she should be reasonably afraid of it. It had seemed so peaceful and beautiful, up until the moment she felt the pain. That, she believed, wasn't supposed to happen. That can't have come from the pureness of the Mirror. Something must have interfered. That evening, she ahd planned to not pay the mirror any attention. But she was drawn to it, like a moth to burning light. She found herself standing in front of it, slowly bringing her hands to touch it. She reminded herself of the pain- it would be unwise to touch it. But then her mind wandered to other things, and she began to think of that whom she loved. She imagined reaching up and stroking his soft skin... She was suddenly aware of the mirror, once again. Her hands were pressed firmly against it, and it felt as though she was sinking, like one would imagine it would feel with quicksand. She began to sense something on the other side of the mirror. Her hands continued to sink, and she took a step closer towards the mirror. Her body was very softly pressed against the mirror, and then she could see it. She could see the Other Side. She saw herself. Not herself as she was now, but as she always wanted to be. This world was what filled her mind everytime she was filled with longing and all her "what if.."s. The world was filled with Possibility and yearning. She was dazed for a moment, then her other self smiled at her, a smile that sent chills down her spine. In that second, she realized: this wasn't simply the world of possibility, because it was tainted. Copyright 2008 Brina |
